Butler to Houston, 3 teams Mia/Hou/Tor

Butler has to go and Houston has all the necessary assets to make a deal for Butler while leaving the young core primarily intact. Involving a 3rd team like Toronto can provide more value to Miami with the same assets, giving Houston a better shot at a deal, if that's a direction they want to go. Note that Temple and Fernando are included for roster balancing, but could be waived, allowing Houston & Miami to fill out their rosters in other ways.

Miami out: Butler, Love, Burks, cash
Miami in: Brown, Brooks, Temple, 27 Phx 1st

Houston out: Brooks, Adams, Jeff Green, Landale, 27 Phx 1st, 25 2nd, 26 2nd, 27 2nd
Houston in: Butler, Love, Burks, Fernando

Toronto out: Brown, Temple, Fernando,
Toronto in: Adams, Jeff Green, Landale, 25 2nd, 26 2nd, 27 2nd, cash (via Mia)

Miami is arguably better after this move, with Brooks replacing Butler in the starting lineup, and Brown adding valuable rotation depth on both sides of the ball. They reduce their payroll by $7 million this year, with a corresponding reduction in their tax bill, and gain substantial salary flexibility next year via Brown's $23 million expiring. They also get a FRP. Can Miami get a better package in terms of maintaining a competitive team with options to improve next year? We'll see.

Houston upgrades Brooks to Butler, adds a bit of shooting off the bench in Burks, and arguably improves their centre depth by replacing Adams & Landale with Love (Fernando is emergency depth, included to balance rosters). They stay $5 million under the tax line, but will have decisions to make next year if they intend to retain VanVleet. The cost, a 1st & 3 late 2nds, seems modest for an opportunity to improve their playoff potential this year, while retaining a solid young core.

Toronto gets 3 late 2nds for Brown, while maintaining room under the tax for additional moves, and, importantly, does not take on salary beyond this year.

No thanks. Way too light on value for Miami imo.

Miami is not getting a haul for Jimmy Buckets. Which of the potentially interested teams is offering more than this? Phoenix has Beal, which Miami doesn't want. Memphis could make an offer based on Bane, which seems unlikely, or Smart. Sacramento won't include Derozan, and GS seems unlikely to send Wiggins, which means it's really a 2 team market imho.

That said, what does Houston need to add to get the deal done for you?

Wow, it's this approach...You're not getting a better offer so accept my lowball offer.

Can't talk to someone who takes that approach.

I'm out.

When a guy demands a trade, has said he is opting out and is now suspended, then, yes, the team needs to start deciding which offer is best, even if it is not great. Especially, when the team is still in the hunt for playoffs.
For Houston, I would rather keep brooks and Adams over Vleet.

You suggested the original proposal was "light" for Miami. My opinion remains that it may be the best offer available, but I'm genuinely curious how you would propose to amend it to make it acceptable. It seems you're unable to do that, which is ... puzzling.

Not sure I'd bet on that.

The Phoenix 2027 1st is a really intriguing pick with how bad things are looking there. That's a legit asset.

And Brooks is on a solid deal. You could probably even flip him for a late first rounder and bad, short-term money, if preferable.

Might even be the beginning of a potential big Booker offer Miami could make at some point, or a smaller KD offer.

It's a financial thing. I think if Houston makes this deal they don't pick up Van Vleet's option and squeezes in a veteran 4th guard type for like 10M, like a Tyus Jones, Brogdon or Schroder type.

If they moved Van Vleet and an expiring for Butler, they're probably an apron team next year.

I think people think we need to accept garbage because it’s the best deal but in reality if no deal is good we just let Jimmy sit and expire at the end of the year or work out a sign and trade. We don’t HAVE to trade him

If this is all we could get for Brown I guess I would live with it as a Raptor fan. I would hope Masai could squeeze out a project/prospect similar to a Agbaji type of value.

I think this feels a bit light for Maimi they get Butler when motivated is still a top 20-30 player. I get Dillon Brooks is a decent guy but I think they get outbid easily Dallas could use him and so could Golden State and I wouldn't count out The Bucks

I don’t see why Toronto is involved and I think Houston is giving up to much.
I think Houston is better off building on what they have rather than giving up assets for a player like Butler.

Miami isn't going to get a huge haul for Butler but they'll get something. This is nothing.

Not only that, but the Raptors get a bunch of draft picks and Miami gets a single one? Can tell what team OP is a fan of.

They get a Suns 2027 first which is better than all the seconds Toronto is getting

okay you twisted my arm we will give you those for the 1st because more picks is better

As a Raptor fan I would also prefer a better return for Brown, and continue to hold some real level of hope they will achieve it. Good on Miami if they can do better than this, but there seems to be a sense that a "good" player plus expiring salary would be a realistic return. They want this sale done asap so as to move on from the drama, which seems to me to mitigate against a lot of bidders, thus holding the price down.

Three late 2nds is just slightly more than nothing. But thanks for your thoughtful response.
