As much fun as it might be to let the Heat marinate in the experience after the Dame fiasco, I'm still opening an investigation into reports that Butler's camp is telling competitive teams not to trade for him.

Yeah, it's a bit insane. He would be an amazing fit in Memphis or Milwaukee but him telling both teams to stay away is completely nuts to me. I mean, just the on paper fit is perfect with both.
Dame didn't have a choice because he was signed for so long, but Jimmy having the opt out and the ability to do... Exactly what he's doing now and did in Chicago and Minnesota... Gives him a ton of leverage. Unfortunately for him, it's also limited the teams willing to give him his extension.

His refusal of Memphis in particular baffles me. Such a good fit. They don't have to gut the team to make it happen, have assets to actually send back to Miami (so it's realistic), they're 3rd in the West with a core that is just entering their primes so they'd be poised to compete for the rest of his career. If they're willing to extend him with him declining his PO for next year, what's the problem?
Why go to Phoenix who are in cap hell, have no draft assets and are just a fringe play-in team in the West?

He wants a commitment to extend him as soon as practical after the trade and has apparently gotten that from the Suns (in a non-tampering kind of way). Also, he wants the leverage of getting traded to a team that really doesn't have a choice but to offer it lest they reconsider if he doesn't play well.

Do you know what that timeline is in terms of offering him an extension post-trade? Can they do it immediately or is there some sort of a moratorium where they have to wait post trade?
So could Memphis trade for him, he opt out of the PO immediately and then sign an extension (assuming the Grizz were on board with that or does he have to wait until this summer? If the latter then I get the desire to go to a team that's got no options other than staying the course regardless of the outcome (although in that case I feel like Milwaukee could be in that same boat, as would the LA teams etc., so still a bit odd that it's so specifically Phoenix or bust).

Gotta admit, many of us on the Blazer board are having a hard time fighting the urge to plague the Miami board with "Simons and a couple of 2nd rounders, and that is the best you are going to do. If you entertain other offers you're an idiot"
...just to get back at many of your callous posters during the Lillard situation.
