Who Wants Malik Monk?

Post#1 » by bpcox05 » Thu Jan 9, 2025 3:53 pm

I’m playing around with a 3 team trade idea during the 2025 off-season that would have Markkanen sent to SAC, Picks/Assets sent to UTA, and Monk sent to a 3rd team (I like the idea of moving forward with a Fox, Ellis, & Carter guard rotation for many reasons).

Which teams out there would be interested in moving some young asset(s)/pick(s) during the 2025 off-season for Monk?

- He will be 27 at the start of next season
- He will make $60.6 mil the next 3 years with a PO the last year
- He’s averaging a career high 30.8 mpg this year
- Per 36 min, he’s averaging…
- .235 USG%
- .569 TS%
- .439 FG%
- .349 3P%
- .885 FT%
- 16.0 FGA
- 8.1 3PA
- 3.4 FTA
- 19.8 PPG
- 4.2 RPG
- 6.1 APG
- 1.1 SPG
- 0.6 BPG
- 2.3 TOPG
- 2.9 FPG

If we're keeping fox. We're keeping Monk.

If Fox gets traded then I think Monk may get traded then too

Ya and with Carter/Keon 3 guard rotations are fine.

I think long term you can have those 4 + Keegan + sabonis. Then fill in a few bigs/forwards.

Kings should move Fox and keep Monk. Soo much value in his contract.

Yep, if Monk is available they should be aggressive trying to acquire him.

Nah Monk is worth more to the Kings than that.

This is the path that gives the Kings the most value. Trade Fox for wing/frontcourt piece(s), get a couple prospects/picks and reset. Monk will give you more production as the lead guard and is a bargain at $20M.

If he were actually available (don’t think he is), he’s a guy the Pistons should chase. Easily movable in the future if Ivey returns as expected, or keepable if Beasley doesn’t want to stay.

Problem is, Monk has actual real positive significant value, unlike a lot of the targets that have been discussed for Detroit, and I’m not sure what we’re actually willing to give up to improve the team. The salary isn’t an issue, but Sacramento would want something that really helps them in return. I know they need bigs and could use Stewart, but I don’t think Detroit gives him up.

Absolutely not, trading Monk would set this team back YEARS. He took a discount to re-sign here and if we trade him this soon it would send a message to potential future free agents plus he is the heart of the team.

Yeah, I don't see Monk being made available really in any scenario. Fox/Keon/Carter/Monk is a great four guard rotation going forward and you can play any three of those guys at the same time.

I see a lot of people suggesting we move Fox for better fits on the wing and simply using Monk as the lead guard but I'm personally very against that idea. I might be dying on this hill alone but Monk should be moved back to the bench, he is the ideal sixth man and Keon is a much better fit with the starters. Moving on from Fox and using Monk as the starting PG is not a viable option, in my opinion.

Monk should be the Kings starting PG. He has become a good distributor and has a great contract. Trade Fox for some solid 2-way wings and the team will do much better than it has so far this season.

Lyles will be a FA in the offseason so we can’t trade him. The trade would be occurring during the 2025 off-season (not the deadline).

I was thinking next week...
If we must wait until Summer, Wendell Carter might be a really nice fit next to Sabonis and Goga has made him expendable for ORL. Also, one of the appeals of trading for Isaac now is that his contract is $25m this year, but drops to $15 this summer and beyond. I think the on-court value is similar but SAC should want to see WCJ continue to be healthy and aggressive the rest of this season. WCJ's extension kicks in after next season - still less than Monk's annual salary, but does make it kind of much for another backup in ORL's deep rotation - presuming Moe Wagner's recovery progresses. WCJ is too good to be buried in a bench frontcourt crowd with Isaac, Moe, da Silva. Magic also have two frps this summer to inexpensively fill out their roster before Franz, Suggs, & Paolo's big extensions hamstring them.

ORL sends: WCJ, 2 srps
SAC sends: Monk

Charlotte should never have given up on him in the first place. I'd love to get him back, but it's highly unlikely Monk will want to come back here, even though everyone involved with ruining the start of his career is gone.

Sacramento should keep him, but if they trade Fox, I hope they are a package deal.

I suggested this because in terms of value the team is limited in ways in can improve the team. Limited assets, no cap space, so if this current core can’t compete resetting and trading Fox brings the most assets back. I’m ok with your scenario as well, but how does the team improve the wing and frontcourt depth?

Yuck..

That's really bad for Sac. Agree Orlando should have signed Monk, now I don't see a trade for him with Orlando.

Say it louder!

Keon needs to start, and you can't find a better 6th man than Monk.
