Hawks / Nuggets / Heat / Suns: Beal to Denver / Butler to Phoenix

Post#1 » by NYG » Sun Jan 12, 2025 2:01 am

Nuggets get:
Bradley Beal
Alec Burks
Vit Krejci

-Gives: Michael Porter Jr., Dario Saric, Zeke Nnaji and Vlatko Cancar

Why: The injury risk is equal for both Porter Jr. and Beal. I have Beal as the better player and Denver taking the upgrade since they're not using any picks.

===

Heat get:
Clint Capela
De'Andre Hunter
Vlatko Cancar
Cody Zeller
2031 Suns 1st

-Gives: Jimmy Butler and Alec Burks

Why: This is about as good of an offer as they can expect if Butler refuses to play for anyone besides Phoenix. No long-term contracts, but they add a first.

===

Hawks get:
Michael Porter Jr.
Dario Saric
Zeke Nnaji

-Gives: De'Andre Hunter, Clint Capela and Cody Zeller

Why: While MPJ is a risk, they don't trade a ton to get him an he could provide a nice fit in Atlanta around their young core.

===

Suns get:
Jimmy Butler

-Gives: Bradley Beal and 2031 1st

Why: The Suns get their guy to fit alongside KD and Booker. If they can just get into the playoffs, they could be lethal.

Essentially...

Suns get Butler
Nuggets get Beal
Hawks get MPJ
Heat get Hunter, Capela and Suns 1st

I have it as (strictly on the court, not including contract/trade value) Butler > Beal > MPJ > Hunter + Capela

But maybe I'm wrong?

Best one I’ve seen…I’m still dubious that anyone takes Beal tho

Do you have Beal as an upgrade to MPJ?

I don’t…not crazy about Beal/Murray backcourt and although MPJ’s contract vs injury history is frightening…it’s not close to Beal’s, particularly when you factor age on top. The sprinkle the no-trade clause on top.

Honestly, I just don’t know who could benefit from Beal- given that contract. Good player, but even at his best, the deal is terrible.

What about adding...

Earlier of 2031 Suns/Nuggets 1st to Denver
Later of 2031 Suns/Nuggets 1st to Miami instead?

Would the pick swap entice Denver? Does "later of" keep Miami engaged?

Neither of these things is true. Might have been true 3-5 years ago, but not now.

People complain about Porter getting a max contract but compared to Beal's deal...oof. Beal's salary and injury inevitability would make this a bonkers move for the Nuggets.

MPJ is better in a role he is playing for Nuggets - play finisher, than Beal would have been in that same role. Beal is better as creator than MPJ but he wouldn't have ball in his hands enough with Jok/Murray/Russ, so no, this wouldn't make Nuggets better.
And of course if you add contract, games missed...

Good trade, not sure that the Hawks and Nuggets do it, though.

Seems very reasonable except that I cannot see Beal ever agreeing to a trade to Denver.

This deal would be awful for the Nuggets. A Butler for MPJ deal would be much better but one they still shouldn't do.

Out of the Murray , AG, MPJ trio, MPJ would be the last one I want to trade. Wait to trade one or both of AG or Murray next year when they are eligible. Yes, their main issue is they don't have a "2nd best player" to carry the non Jokic minutes, but it can't be for someone of some combination of old/injured/overpaid like Beal or Butler.

I don't know if Atlanta should trade their starting center and key 6th man for MPJ while taking on contracts which hurt them.

This is the best you're going to get so take it? That's your rationale? And then you try to stiff us on the pick?!?!

I'm all about playing hardball with Jimmy and the Suns. Jimmy needs to increase his list or stew on our bench, or the Suns need to come up with a better offer. And understand, it's not that hunter isn't good. He's fine. It's his contract. It's a year too long. We're not taking that contract. And we're not taking any deal where the rationale is, "I know it's not what you want but take it anyway"

No. Why on earth would Denver do this? MPJ is currently playing power forward while Gordon is out. His size and rebounding is badly needed. And he's shooting better than Beal. And, unlike Beal and the rest of Denver's players, he's available to play every day. He's entering his prime years, he's only 26.

People are still under the impression that MPJ is not a good player. He's very good.

No thank you.
