Source: The Suns and Hornets have held preliminary trade discussions that would send Jusuf Nurkic and second-round picks for Nick Richards.

Phoenix has removed Nurkic from the rotation as they seek a trade.

Charlotte would send another player alongside Richards in the deal.

My thought is Richards has positive value, Martin has positive value, Nurkic has negative value.

I don't see how Suns come up with the draft compensation for this. I am not sure how a 3rd team would fit.

Can we fix this? Or is this deal destined to fall apart?

I think Cody is pretty neutral at best? Like, useful filler? For as good and useful as he can be defensively, he’s just so bad offensively.

As for the value gap, I don’t know. Like, I don’t think Nurkic is quite as dead as is being repeated, as much as he’s going to be scapegoated for Phoenix’s failures (along wih Beal). But, Charlotte is still owed there, so I don’t know that Phoenix’s last seconds do it, or if Charlotte needs to add more value to get the first somehow, even if I don’t think that Phoenix should consider dealing their last first in a Nurkic/Richard’s type swap at all.

If Martin is neutral, Micić can be inserted. So that gets the deal closer. But still, it should cost the Suns to move Nurkic alone.

Does Charlotte have any interest in kicking the tires on Bol Bol. Do they want to trade Micic for Monte Morris?

The reality is that a bunch of seconds would normally do it, and Richards on the court value is pretty meh, but I don't like eating next season's cap space cheap.

Martin/Richards+ 2 SRP for Nurkic/Dunn

The Suns get 2 useful players and 2 SRP .save a few millions...the Hornets a defensive prospect

I think some might argue it would require one 1st round pick to move Nurkic.

I don't think Suns can even cover the value of that, let alone 2 second rounders for Richards.

I see this deal already dead or dying a slow painful death.

This seems doable.

Yeah, I think I was clear that it should cost the suns to move Nurkic alone? For Phoenix in a deal like this, Martin is useful. Micic isn’t as much, since Phoenix actually has PG’s.

I just think that if Phoenix only has one last first to try and salvage their current build, it’s really hard to consider them using it in a Nurkic for Richards swap. Even if we can make it seem like it should be fair?

The suns are not including Dunn to go from Nurk (who is still likely better than Richards) to Richards. I think this is just a case of Phoenix not have the right mix of value/contracts to make this work.

Richards/Grant Williams for Nurk, add a year to Nurk's deal but lower the cap hit, while getting a filler center meanwhile...
Defense wins draft lotteries!

If Nurk is still likely better than Richards, why are the Suns going to the Hornets in the first place?

Yes, I think that another player from the Hornets is Grant Williams.

This doesn't, there is no way that the Suns are so stupid that they nclude Dunn in a swap for some improvement (in form of a better fit) at C.

Save money. Maybe get a backup wing. Change the mix up if cheap enough. That is why they were only offering 2nds in the rumor.

A small market team is in position to eat negative value contracts to save money for a 2nd apron team for 2nd round picks when we have 14 on hand.

As I said Phoenix likely doesn't have the right mix of value here, no fixing it. Charlotte should ask for more value and Phoenix is not going to offer much more.

Yeah, otherwise this is the rich begging the poor for money.

Makes no sense.

IMO Richards, Green for Nurk is pretty solid

18 million for a backup center (Mark Williams starts) this year and next is not solid at all for the Hornets, who also lose their starting SG here.

Where is the reward?
