This. McCollum does fit, but so do a lot of other good players on massive contracts that are not realistic options due to cap/apron concerns.

Eventually, Orlando will have to commit to a high salary roster, but don’t think that time is now and don’t think that player is CJ McCollum.

Spotrac has the Magic $11.5M below the tax line next year with 15 players signed, including all 4 guys in this deal (Anthony/Howard/Harris/CoJo) for a combined $29.6M. So between the $11.5M they're under and the $29.6M they're clearing, that's $41.1M of room below the tax. McCollum will make $30.7M. So they'd still have $10.4M to use to fill their last few spots. They'd have a roster of:

Suggs / Black
CJ / KCP
Wagner / Da Silva / Houstan
Banchero / Isaac
WCJ / Wagner / Bitadze

Maybe, just maybe this is a summer deal but definitely not this season. KCP has only played 5 games with a fully healthy roster and was recently signed.

Relationships matter in the NBA and Orlando almost never signs Klutch guys so trading KCP to the worst team in the NBA after a half a season and after all the injuries Orlando has had would look really really bad. Just not something Orlando front office would do realistically (unfortunately).

I keep mentioning this every time I see guys like KCP and DeRozan mentioned in trade offers. This isn't NBA 2K. Signing KCP was a big deal for an Orlando franchise that never really signs free agents. They lured him away from a recent champion, and KCP was very happy to come to Orlando. Trading him away just a few short months later would seriously impact their ability to sign free agents in the future. Things like this are never taken into consideration on this board, but it should be. Recent free agent signings aren't traded, unless you want to make it tougher for agents to trust you in the future.

If by “lured” you mean overpaid beyond what DEN was willing to do…right. KCP would be very happy to take his fat new deal back to LAL or DEN, etc and play for a ring this year and next. “This isn’t NBA2K” is definitely among the weakest cliches on RealGm
