2s for 1 deal!

Post#1 » by penbeast0 » Sat Jan 18, 2025 12:29 am

Phoenix is apparently down to one 2031 1st and 1 2nd in this decade. Washington has a bunch of extra draft picks, mainly 2nds, coming up. Would Phoenix consider dealing the right to swap the 2031 1st with Washington for 4 2nds spaced through the years? Say, Phoenix's own 2025 pick back, plus a 27 (Brooklyn or Dallas), a 29 (Washington), and a 31 pick (Washington)?

I hope not for Phoenix fans. It’s bad value and they should stop the bleeding at some point.

They can probably get a late 1st for that swap from another team like Utah or OKC or Brooklyn

I don't think 4 2nds helps them more than the 31 unprotected first if they are looking to make an addition now. And obviously doesn't help more if they stop doubling down on a mix that doesn't appear to be working.

I think for this to make sense, Phoenix would need to get a bad gtd first they could use to flip now while at least still having swap rights in 31 so its not a total loss. For instance Brooklyn has 3 late 1sts right now. They'd almost certainly give one of those plus some 2nds to get that swap. Heck I'd give the worst two of those picks for the upside play of that swap though someone is going to come post their strange valuation of a swap is worth pick 45 or something.

At some point , you got to stop the madness.

If you want do first for seconds just wait for trade day in the year the suns do have a late first .

I don’t see WAS doing PHX any favors. They didn’t give a single 1st for Beal bc Beal used his NTC to control the assets PHX sent back. Which is another thorn of Beals NTC; he can veto any iteration of a trade that guts the next team he goes to.

It’s in WAS’s best interest for PHX to not get better, so they can actually exercise some of those pick swaps down the line.

IF PHX was looking to do a deal like this (many 2nds for their 2031 1st) WAS is assuredly not the only game in town. SAS would likely be interested - they have too many second round picks to use in the next few years (18 SRP's IIRC).

yeah throw Charlotte in there, we have 13 or 14 2nds, and quite a lot of them are pretty favorable picks (2 of them this year currently #34 and #35). I'd comfortably gamble 5 or 6 of those 2nds away for that.

The pick is obviously a very long way out but Phoenix is going to be in ruins by 2027 or 2028, and is going to have to claw its way out of nothing, with zero of their own draft picks, even the 1sts they have are like triple and quadruple swaps so it's pretty damn unlikely for them to be good picks. Their late 2020s to early 2030s era is going to be very rough unless they manage to get some epic return for KD and Booker when this era of the team is done and/or strike gold finding a franchise player with a pick in the 20s.

Phoenix shouldn't do this, they should leverage that 1st for an actual on-court upgrade to help the team now, or sit tight and pull the plug before KD is too old to have value.

I was just being a little salty haha. But earnestly, I think at some point PHX will decide who to keep and who to let go, and recoup some picks between now and 2031. If they don’t make a move for Butler and still aren’t competitive by the end of the year, they may tear it down, or move guys like Grayson Allen and get some picks back. Draft night is always a good time to catch a team willing to give up future picks for something immediate.
