Suns/Blazers sigh its Robert Williams
Nurkic/25 CLE 1st
for
Williams/Banton/26 MEM 2nd (top 42 protected)/29 worse of IND/WAS 2nd
Blazers get their 1st for Williams, but its a late, late one and they have to give back two bad 2nds and take on a bit of salary. Still they should be happy to do this.
Suns get another more athletic, defensive minded center to pair with Richards, get a long guard to take a flier on, save millions in real money, and while those 2nds don't project well, the important thing is they give the Suns something to use in future minor moves.

Think both teams should do it imo.

Think I'd rather get expirings and seconds than the 29th/30th pick, Nurkic's salary, and send out seconds (bad ones but it's like... Something), no? Unless they really want to win the media day by being and to say they got a first

Definitely fair. But they are going to be just as brutally bad next year, so I don't care about the extra $5M in salary and would gladly pay it and the bad 2nds to get the late 1st. Now maybe they are better off just dumping Williams and then taking on $10Mish salary next year into their MLE this summer for something? But hard to project what might be out there, so I'm getting my minor value now.

Doesn’t seem to me like the Blazers owe the seconds back.

Gotcha.
I mean I have those 2nds as having about as minimal value as can be and only included them as grease for the Suns to make future deals. I chose the worst 2nds on purpose. It doesn't really effect the value in any meaningful way though. Just those picks have some utility to the Suns and less to the Blazers so tried to add overall value by including them.

It’s not a huge thing of course, I just think having to eat Nurkic next year means the 30th pick is probably fair for Williams.

As a last resort on deadline day, this looks okay. I think that it gets outbid by someone like the Mavs with Maxi and FRP(better one) or maybe Mavs, OKC, etc.
But I would not be shocked to see something like this on the WT

Maybe, but Williams is owed money for next year too. It’s not “eating Nurkic’s salary” as much as eating an extra couple million next year?

The only way I would put it in those terms is if someone else was offering expirings but lesser (if any) draft compensation and I was choosing between the two deals.

Hypothetically, Williams is a great fit for Phoenix but that injury history is so hard to swallow. With the seconds coming back it makes a deal more palatable for me. I think most would be fine without the picks coming back to PHX.

I don’t get why people have Williams with this kind of value. He has missed over 300 games in six and a half seasons.

Well it all depends on the market. Assuming gafford is off for now.
C options are Jonas, RWill/Ayton, Vuc, Nurk, Capela, maybe one of the Bucks guys for financials (Portis lets say), and of course superstar Jericho Sims
If you are looking for a reliable backup, break glass, get boards - Val is your guy. If you are looking for someone who could bring a different type of presence and change the game when he is on the court- timelord is the guy.
Speaking as a Knicks fan -- as annoyed as we are about Mitch being snake bit, when he is on the court we are a different team.

Sure. No one is offering an expiring and a 1st. So here, it's a 2 year deal back to get a 1st. The super low 2nds are maybe just equalizing it. They definitely mean more to Phoenix than they do to Portland.

We’re emphasizing that they’re super late seconds, which I’ll concede for the Memphis ‘26, but who knows about 2029 Indy and Washington? Even with it being the lesser of the two it’s not impossible in 4 years that could be say the 37th pick in the draft?
Maybe it’s silly to quibble over, but if it ended up being
Williams, 2026 #50, 2029 #37
For
Nurkic, #30
I don’t know if that’s a win for Portland.

In the rare case that both Indy and Washington are absolutely terrible that one year, yes. More realistically, if that pick ends up 44 or 49, then it’s a a very solid win for Portland, especially to consolidate into the 1st round from 2 seconds and a small salary absorption.

Fair point.
WAS looks like might be a few years away and IND has had some struggles.

Maybe. But we’re also talking enough years away that we have to assume bad teams now will be good teams then. Indy is young, and already successful. Right now, they’re 2nd is 50? Have to assume that with all their young 20’s players, they’ll continue to be pretty good going forward?

Unless a team has a young superstar locked up, I don’t think it’s safe to assume anything about 4 years from now.
And even then it’s just safer, not safe.
I’d do the protected Memphis ‘26 second and keep the ‘29 second.
