Boring little Raps/Clips deal
Tucker
Bones
31 LAC 2nd
for
Olynyk
Raps get a 2nd and more flexibility for the summer, and with rumors flying today that Masai wants to add a star to Barnes, let's start getting apron room in order.
Clippers turn useless players into a solid vet who spaces as a different look from their current centers.

Yeah a pick 6 years from now to take on 2 mill in cap this year? Easy no.
He has played great now that his back isn't bothering him....shooting 54% from 3 his last 15 games.

I mean, wouldn't the Raptors do this if it was the best deal offered at the deadline? I can see holding out until the last minute in hopes of more, but do the Raptors actually have a use for him, no matter how well he's playing?

Yes, play him next season when we are trying to get in play in/play off

With the guys the Raps have on the market (Olynyk, Boucher, Brown) if the best they can get for them is bad salary and 2nd 5 years away, they will just try and resign them to affordable deals. Olynyk and Boucher def want to stay in Toronto, and from I can see from Bruce, he is very happy here aswell. We are likely gunning for playoffs next year and all these guys have played well, when healthy.

I see. I thought the Raps were more in "trade vets for picks" mode than "make the playoffs next season" mode. But I guess that makes sense given the Ingram rumors, which seemed a bit bizarre.

I would say you aren't going to trade any of them then, because none of those three guys are worth more than meh salary and a 2nd round pick.
But more interesting to me is if you plan on bringing back Boucher and Brown and keeping KO, where is the improvement coming from? I know they will have a likely top 7 or 8 pick but rookies generally aren't net positives right away and it leaves no money to go bring in a quality veteran.
I know IQ missed a bunch of time, but I can't see 70 games of him being enough. I struggle to see the plan if its just run it back and add a draft pick and think you are a playoff team.

olynyk is the only one i wouldn't mind bringing back. we have in house young players who could use more minutes in place of boucher (mogbo), brown (walter) and mitchell (shead). We have no C prospects to speak of though.

trade expiring vets for picks and increased playing time for prospects on the team mode, yes. unfortunately there's nobody to takeover kelly's minutes

Re: Boring little Raps/Clips deal
Good feedback. Thanks guys.
I wonder then if Toronto should be looking to use Brown/Boucher's salary to add a veteran under contract at least one more year then? Should be able to get a solid rotation player back from a team who would prefer additional flexibility.
Because if the 2nd round pick they are worth holds no interest, why just let them expire and be limited to the MLE? Why not use their salary slot now to add a piece?

I suspect what you're saying is why we are involved to be in the ingram trade talks. It all comes down to price. If Masai sees a good buy low opportunity he might roll the dice. if not he will trade the expirings for 2nd(s) and let youngsters get more minutes imo
In order of my personal preference for boucher/brown/mitchell:
1) take back worse contracts to get pick(s)
2) buy low to add a win now piece for next year
3) get expirings and 2nd(s)

Re: Boring little Raps/Clips deal
I'm not talking about Ingram actually at all. I mean a player under contract in 25-26(and possibly beyond). I'm being told the goal is playoffs next year. I don't think a rookie and an MLE signing would have me projecting this roster into the playoffs. Barnes is a stud. Poeltl is solid. The other key guys are still very much question marks if they even help you win, right?
But I'm guessing you believe in RJ and IQ and Dick more than me. Fine, even with that you know they need more. So why not add a veteran? Still room to play the young guys this season all you want.

its (much?) cheaper to get bird rights of an expiring vet who dont have much of a market in FA than getting someone cost controlled. see: butler/ingram vs cam johnson rumored price.

Re: Boring little Raps/Clips deal
The disrespect for Bones Hyland is too much. He is a very solid young prospect, just 24, begging for time but stuck behind better, more veteran players. On a team like the Raps, he could get meaningful play. For example, in the last game he started, back in April 10, 2024, he played 43 minutes and scored 37 points with 9 assists and 4 boards. This is his ceiling and an obvious outlier, but his skills are solid, and he needs time on the court to develop. Olynyk, on the other hand, deserves to ring chase. Nice deal.
