Trade which wont happen- Banchero<-->Fox

Post#1 » by zaymon » Sat Feb 1, 2025 11:29 am

Sacramento Kings
In:
Paolo Banchero
Anthony Black
Cole Anthony

Kings rebuild around Banchero and Black which like and compliment each other. They also keep their 2026 pick to leave the upside higher. Sacramento would need to follow that with Sabonis and Derozan trade. There is also option to trade Sabonis to Orlando but we like Bitadze.

Monk/Black/Derozan/Banchero/Sabonis

Orlando Magic
In:
De'Aron Fox
Keon Ellis
Every Sacramento first round pick outisde 2026

Magic will not be able to add another max level creator and keep the roster balanced with Franz and Paolo. Banchero has very high upside but him and Franz doesnt work well in p&r, they have their problems spacing the floor, and Banchero is not a good defender while Franz doesnt provide much rim protection. They seem to limit their upside instead of improving it.
This way Orlando is proactive instead of retroactive. They aquire assets while also improving the team.

Fox/Suggs/KCP/Wagner/Bitadze.

I expect my fellow Magic fans to kill me while i am not sure about Kings exctasy "Banchero, Sabonis awful idea; we want picks during rebuild" etc :P
My money is on Banchero going number 1 !

Sac should do this.

Orlando really shouldn’t imo.

Just so hard to get a prospect as good as Paolo…

Yeap it won’t happen.

You try and see where if goes if you are Orlando . If it doesn’t work between Banchero , Wagner and sugg … probably you move Suggs ?

Edit - and you move one of the core trio like 3 playoffs later.

wow is that efficiency gnarly from Banchero...

I'm a fan of Paolo but it stops with the every first part, certainly when I see that. His shooting hasn't been getting better as you would like..

Ironically, because he doesn’t have any backcourt playmakers or even reliable shooters…every shot he takes is inefficient. He just makes a lot of them. ORL is killing this kid by just giving him the ball and saying “make something happen”. No way ORL makes this trade…easier to find a better supporting cast than to blow up the young 6’10 duo of super-versatile forwards.

I actually get the thinking of the OP. I took have long been skeptical that you can get to where you want with Banchero/Wagner as your best players. So while we tend to view our young guys as sacred, sometimes moving early and scooping up a bunch of value can be smart.

Agree it won't ever get really considered, but I don't think it crazy.

Kind of like the idea of a deal between Orlando and Sacremento, it just sort of seems that it is the wrong team that tries to get really good now in OP's trade idea.

Orlando in: De'Aaron Fox, Jordan McLaughlin
Sacremento in: Cole Anthony, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, DEN25FRP, ORL25FRP, ORL27FRP, ORL29FRP, 26 swap-rights

Orlando gets a primary offensive creator to pair with Banchero and Wagner which fits the time-line. The team should be able to hold on to all three and Suggs and Wendell-Carter on their current deals for the comning years.

Wendell-Carter (28), Bitadze (12), M. Wagner (8)
Banchero (36), Isaac (12)
F. Wagner (36), Da Silva (12)
Suggs (28), Black (20)
Fox (38), Suggs (10)

Sacremento picks up some juicy draft assets to rebuild around Sabonis, either through draft or future trades. They loose creation but (assuming KCP's shooting returns to normal) they will have added defense and shooting.

Sabonis (38), Lyles (10)
Murray (36), Lyles (12)
DeRozan (36), Ellis (12)
Caldwell-Pope (30), Ellis (18)
Monk (34), Anthony (14)

Sure, thats the more popular idea but can you make a champion around 3 max players where all 3 are average shooters at best and need the ball? You would need a 3 point shooting center who can also protect the rim at elite level and on mle level deal....
In the end is it even contending level team ? You also burn assets limiting future adjustments.
I like Paolo, i even won some money betting he will get picked 1st, but building around him and Franz at the same time ? You can just switch every pick and roll between them and Paolo doesnt give you defensive upside of two mobile forwards in the lineup......
My money is on Banchero going number 1 !

Sure but Suggs actually compliments both players and is a competetive beast while having the least value.
Why make a mistake when you can try to predict the future and plan around it ?

Fox has never been a big "creator" as a PG, he is a scoring PG. As for not working with Franz, it worked pretty well last year to get into the playoffs and push Cleveland to 7 games. and Banchero is decent at defense, not a defensive stopper, but he is solid.

this is a bad trade for Orlando.

Given the offers we’ve been discussing and Orlando’s various assets this seems a little crazy to me. Orlando can be competitive without Paolo.

Deadline trade is important to max value for Sac though, two playoff runs worth a lot more than 1.

It's a valid question. While none of them are good shooters, none of them are to the level where they can be left completely open either. So I think the spacing will work even with a center like Carter, that is not really a floor spacer, but also not a stand under the rim only kind of center either. Wagner is also a fairly good free throw shooter, so I have at least some hope that he can improve as well and become more consistant from deep further on in his career.

I think you are on point with the down-side, fewer assets and fewer possible ways to make adjustment to the plan down the line. It is a tricky balance, but at some point one has to stop rolling the ball forward and comitting to contending. I think this is the time.

As far as my evaluation of the Magic after the trade, I see a team that I believe will likely be top 3 in defense and top 10 in offense. For the regular season especially I think the defense will force many turnovers and the offense should be really good in transition. With the team being so young as well I think the chance of internal improvement probably makes it a risk worth going for.

I had Paolo as more valuable because of contract, age, etc. before Fox "asked" out of Sacramento. Kings need to be adding. They won't, but they would need to IMO.

Did you miss the part where he added Keon Ellis who is a very good supporting player and. Atop notch perimeter defender and like 4 1st round picks?

I have Keon Ellis as a nice player, but not exactly an overly valuable player. I think this board as a whole tends to overvalue role players. And I read the pick part as not including pick swaps. Because if it's every pick outside of 2026 excluding pick swaps, that comes down to the 2028 and 2030 picks. Which again is nice, but not this amazing thing.

Not saying it would be my first offer on the phone either. But in terms of where the price might go to get him, I am guessing it is not too far off - Spurs could offer a pretty good package without including any of their own picks even. The value of the picks are not super good either in my estimation. My guess would be that the Magic would at least catch Miami and Detroit after getting Fox, so the picks this year could be somehting like 17-20 from Orlando and 25ish from Denver. The other two first I would assume are not great either, a little protection on these would of cause be nice as well for Orlando.

I think Fox leaving is a fair concern, and it would make sense only to do the deal if you have an idea that he would like to stay. Good weather, up and coming team, doesn't seem like the worst situation.

I am also a little unsure if Fox is the best way to go, but it is a player that fits the timeline. An other option could be a veteran guard which could probably be had a lot cheaper - in the offseason I thought the Magic should have went after Harden rather than KCP. If the Spurs want to trade for Fox and CP3 would like to move on from the Spurs to not have his role reduced, maybe getting involved and getting CP3 could be an option too if he was open to it.
