Monte’s Odds

The Fox move reeks of desperation IMO.
Thoughts on Monte’s future this summer?

Monte will take the blame but he had nothing to do with this.
Sac fans know it’s Vivek.

Depends a lot on what he does this offseason. I'd try to turn some of those firsts into Cam Johnson, and maybe another wing defender and/or playmaker. If he does, makes the playoffs and puts a decent fight in the first round, maybe that's enough. Anything short of that, he's likely gone. Realistically he should have been gone a long time ago.

I think Lavine is good so I think he survives. Might make a small deal, nothing else major IMO

Welcome back, the good old Kings!

Monte was put in an incredibly difficult position with two top 30 players but no top 10 or 15 guy. On top of that, the combination of your top 30 players being a PG who isn't a lethal shooter and a big man who isn't a high-impact defend or shooter makes team building around them difficult. All things considered Monte did a good job in putting wings and shooters around the two and secondary creation.
Did he find the perfect 3rd piece? obviously not, but he did build the best Kings team in 2 decades.
The roster now is interesting with monk/lavine/derozan/murray/sabonis and some interesting young pieces and a healthy amount of picks to make future moves. The coaching change is, all things considered on the poor optics, an excellent move to cut bait early rather than ride out with Brown based on what happened in 2023.
It did appear Fox had intentions of leaving Sacramento and Monte moved on from Fox near his apex of value rather than holding on until it's too late. In fact, both the Fox move and Brown fire show he is willing to make difficult decisions and move on from pieces at the right time.
The team sill lacks the overall talent of a title contender but they now have the assets and salaries to make a deal if one shakes lose.

Came to say the same. GMs work within the frame of what the team governor allows.

Anyone watching the Bulls the last few years with Lavine and DDR and saying "I want that!" has to be on thin ice, even if he's just the scapegoat that Vivek chooses

I don't really think they get much worse this season tbh but were they good enough for him to keep his job before this trade?

They shouldn’t be done imo. Demar should be dealt, they should get a 3/4 and a backup big

I mean when the star player lets you know I don't want to be here, I'm not going to extend, that's not on the GM. Now he should be graded on his execution of the trade, but I think it would be a mistake to make that decision based on just the rest of this season.

I don’t think it’s THAT bad tbh.
Maybe I’m not the biggest fan of players like Fox but the deal didn’t immediately strike me as terrible.

The problem is that we had 2.5 years to make it work. It's not surprise that de'aaron wanted big man help. But at every turn we did nothing. Over 2.5 years we've swapped Barnes for derozan and added devin carter. Thats not acceptable for any gm.
Go look at the pieces every other team added around their stars. While every west team got better, we kept kicking the can down the road and refusing to trade picks.
I don't blame de'aaron. Vivek didn't want to spend, and monte didn't want to do his job. We as kings fans were supposed to be content with not being the laughing stock and ignore the roster imbalance.

That sorta depends on the reason he doesn’t want to stay, right?
If it’s because the team isn’t good enough that’s sort of on the GM.
I don’t hate this trade but I do think there’s some caveats to what you’re saying here. Fox wasn’t trying to go to a big market- he just wanted to win it would seem.

yeah that's fair snake. I tend to think of players wanting out more on ownership, but if Fox believed he couldn't win there, the GM certainly needs to own some of it.
Its weird because the team was really good 2 years ago. And they were 10 games over 500 last year, just a brutal conference where that gets you 9th.
And they got off to a slow star this year but were really coming on under Christie. And were aggressively still in the market trying to improve even after the Barnes/Derozan swap.
I don't feel like McNair's really done a bad job. I mean this is the first even good Kings run in 2 decades. I wouldn't be quick to move on from him.

I kind of think the Kings might end up a better team after this trade. I think LaVine is not three 1sts worse than Fox, and he's a better fit with Monk and DeRozan.

It’s not really three first round picks. The Charlotte one is going to convert to a second.

The Bulls got back their first from the Spurs as well.

This wasn't even the worse trade the Kings made with the Spurs in the last 8 months. The Barnes trade was borderline inexplicable, both in terms of team building and value.

Bro.. this is Demar reputation stuff… he was a 25/5/5? Very good player in Chicago who they thought fit the system
