Jazz/Hawks/Spurs draft day. Trae to Jazz

Post#1 » by RookieJazz » Thu Feb 13, 2025 7:19 pm

Assumption: Jazz get a top 4 pick and get Flagg or another wing. It would be especially better if Jazz ended up with #1 and got Flagg.
If so, Jazz can turn things around and become a contender in a fly.

Jazz in: Trae Young, Keldon Johson
Jazz out: Collins, Clarkson, Sexton, 2027 1st UTA/CLE/MIN/LAL (better pick), 2028 Jazz 1st, 2029 1st UTA/CLE/MIN (better pick), 2031 PHX 1st

Hawks in: Collins (exp), Clarkson (exp), 2026 swap with Spurs removed, 2027 ATL 1st back, 2028 Jazz 1st
Hawks out: Trae Young

Spurs in: Sexton (exp), 2027 1st UTA/CLE/MIN/LAL (better pick), 2029 1st UTA/CLE/MIN (better pick), 2031 PHX 1st
Spurs out: Keldon Johson, 2026 swap with Hawks removed, 2027 ATL 1st back,

Why for Jazz: Build a strong team with Young/SG/Flagg/Lauri/Kessler and rebuild faster
Why for Hawks: Start rebuilding with their own control of picks and an extra pick in 2028. Remember, the market for Trae was low in the previous offseason.
Why for Spurs: If Hawks keep Young, these picks will be mid 1st at best. Switch 1 pick and 1 swap to 3 picks over the 6 years. Also, get a exp. with some potential (Sexton) for a longer contract (KJ).

It's interesting and wouldn't surprise me if we got Flagg and Ainge decided to push in the assets we have to make the playoffs, but I would rather wait a year, even if it means trading Lauri. 2025 and 2026 have great top end talent, and I'd love to build a team with a core of young players that can be stars, rather than rolling the dice on one of those guys and pushing all in with top 35 players around them.

That's way more than I can see Utah sending out for that returning package (personally I don't want Trae anywhere near the Jazz roster) and the Spurs are stealing value here. I would hope that Ainge wouldn't even consider this.

None of this is happening. Hawks would rather look to bring back hometown kid Sexton... to back up/play with Trae.

I'd def. be open to trading Sexton. Something like Niang + Matthews + 2-3 2nds would probably be ballpark.

Hmm I take it Sexton is looking to move on from SLC once his contract ends? I'll say irl the org loves that butterball Niang. He brings an edge to the team...

Haven't kept up with CS in a min, does he not run the team good enough as the primary starter. I feel Orl would give up decent value for him.

Atlanta would need to make many more moves to truly bottom out to make the 26 and 27 picks be truly worthwhile for tanking reasons. Ressler probably isn't willing to bottom out and take the money hit that comes with it.

Jazz are tanking next year. There all in trade isn’t until trade deadline next year at best. Most likely you see Utah get aggressive draft day not this draft but the next and most likely the trade deadline two years from now. Jazz just have to be patient with the tank. A one year tank isn’t enough. They have to don’t years minimum.

It depends, if they land Cooper Flagg I think chances are good they're done with tanking and pivot to winning instead, they'd have 3 legit starters (Flagg, Lauri, Kessler) plus some good backups in Collins and Sexton, some youngsters in the pipeline, and more than enough draft assets to make noise in the trade market. They could put together a good team right away if they wanted to.

On the surface, this seems like a good deal for the Spurs. However, what people should keep in mind is that, if the Hawks want to get their picks back to tank, Spurs hold a lot of leverage and as a result it'd take an overpay to get it done. With that said: 1) I don't see the Hawks tanking, even if they move on from Trae 2) If they do, it's more likely for a package of more distant picks, similar to the one the Rockets got from the Nets, or maybe a young player of their interest. So I don't see something like this happening, in this terms.

They would lose their pick. It is still protected top 8 to the Thunder next year

If Utah owned their pick next year I would agree. But OKC owns the pick so the Jazz need to be top 8 in the tank next year. After next year they can start to be competitive.
