Ivey seemed to have taken a big step this season before he got hurt, but it's also true that the Pistons improved without him, The fit alongside Cade is questionable and doesn't benefit either of them. This trade gives them a starting 4, who in theory should fit perfectly

The Jazz get a super athletic guard prospect who was shooting over 40% from 3 this season...with a higher ceiling than even Lauri and a valuable veteran like Harris who is set to expire so they also save money in the long run.

I get the idea that other teams think that Markannen might be a buy low option after this season, but I don't get the sense that the Utah brass find him any less valuable. I still expect their default would be to keep him unless someone makes an over the top offer. I don't think that this would even remotely move the needle for the Jazz.

And Ivey having a higher ceiling than Markannen is certainly a novel opinion. I'm not convinced that his significant increase in 3fg% (in a small sample size this season) is sustainable. I'd put greater odds that he regresses to his mean.

This is light for Lauri. I think Ivey could be a good centerpiece for a Lauri deal but this is missing additional value/compensation.

Ainge is greedy and cheap. There's no way he'd take this offer. Knowing him he'd try and get Cade out the deal.

I like the thinking though. Lauri is a good fit for Detroit in the 4 spot.

Ainge missed his chance to sell high on Lauri and now trading him for a realistic market value package would be like admitting him mistake.

I like the idea of Lauri to the Pistons but his 40 mill per contract is pricey. I’d do a deal like the Wolves got for KAT. Pistons give top 5 protected first, Holland, and Harris (Harris to a third team for whatever assets). This deal of deal makes most sense as it improves the current roster and gives Utah assets more in their time line.

Obv the Pistons do this immediately. It’s not enough for Lauri.

Assuming our pick goes to Minnesota this year, I’d consider this deal + a top 5 protected first in 2026.

Why the protection? Because the Pistons are one serious Cade injury away from totally sucking. We have other good parts on the car, but Cade is the engine.

I’d also like to expand the deal a bit with Sexton in it, if possible. He’d likely get to start here with Ivey gone.

Markkanen has been so mediocre this year that this is a reasonable offer, but Ainge would never agree to this because it would be a humiliation that would get him fired.

Scoot can confirm/deny, but I thought once the draft passed, what you’ve done in the past doesn’t matter. As we’ll have all our own firsts from 26+ (and no others), I was under the impression we could trade any future firsts as long as it isn’t two consecutive ones — ie the fact that we traded what turned out to be the 25 first no longer matters.

A Jazz beat writer just wrote about it… Utahs coaches and Markannen have been focused on different facets of his game this season, so his production would take a hit but he would grow as a player.

Prior to this season Ivey was a negative contract. I'm not sure I'm ready to say he's there after 30 solid games. He's going to need a new deal after next season, feels risky. Detroit is a first or two light.

Correct, Ted Stepien's ghost only cares about future drafts, what happened to your draft pick from yesterday doesn't matter to him. You can trade every draft pick your franchise ever has if you wait until the day after the draft to trade the next one.

I thought the OP was very light and I'm low on Lauri. 2+ picks are probably needed.
