Who wants Gradey Dick?

Post#1 » by Thaddy » Wed Feb 26, 2025 4:01 pm

The Raptors have a logjam at the 2G position and their in the Kasp, Johnson, and VJ range. They also have Agbaji and Walter. Agbaji is their best 3+D option and Walter is in his rookie year making it hard to give him up so soon. It's a tough call but it might be Gradey.

The Raptors need C and PF prospects that can stretch the floor. They are looking to compete next year so a player that can help them be competitive but is also under 23 years old and can develop further would be ideal.

Any ideas? Maybe Jovic and a 2nd?

I don't think the Heat would give you Jovic for forty seven Dicks let alone add a pick to make the swap.

Feels like he's a good buy low candidate, which makes me hesitant to trade him.

It wasn't a Heat fan. It was, on fact, a raptors fan. We don't need another wing when we've got Herro, Wiggins, Robinson, Jacquez, Highsmith, Burks, and Larsson. If you'll recall, we turned down the offer.

I like Dick (huh huh) but I don't see him complimenting Herro, nor do I see him replacing Wiggins in our lineup, so we deplete our frontcourt, which is quite thin without Jovic, in order to bring in a wing to take over Duncan Robinson's role? I'm not feeling it.

No. Someone was offering Agbaji for Jovic a while ago, and they are Toronto fans.

Godaddycurse wrote:Miami trade: Jovic, min filler (probably sent w/ cash to another team)
Toronto trade: Agbaji

Why for Miami: They have a glut of PF's and could use a 3/D guard backing up/playing next to Herro
Why for Toronto: Opposite issue; have a glut of SG's and could use a big on their bench. helps with cap issue next year

add second(s) if needed

He also has 2 cheap years left. I think they trade agbaji before dick. I think Dick's numbers will look much better coming off the bench next year

Hmm...I'm not sure how valuable he is.

Here are his baseline stats and then we can try and paint a profile about him.

35% 3P on 6 3PA/G, 87% FT, .244 FTR, 9 AST%

The promising part about Dick is all of these numbers, including STL%, BLK%, TRB% and OREB% have increased from Year 1 to Year 2. It shows a clear growth and learning from Year 1 to Year 2.

The first player who comes to mind in comparison as a higher-end outcome is Klay Thompson. He was nearly a full year older than Dick during his first season, but here are those stats.

41% 3P on 4 3PA/G, 86 FT%, .127 FTR, 14 AST% (This dropped considerable to around 10% the next 2 seasons had has been a career 11% AST)

I'm not sure Dick has the defensive capabilities of Klay, but I think a powerade version of the gatorade version of Klay isn't a bad outcome.

The next comparison is Norman Powell, who took a few years in the league to find his footing.

Career 39% 3P, 10 AST%, .282 FTR, 83% FT

Dick has more size than Powell and is well ahead on the learning curves, though not all developmental paths are equal or follow the same trajectory.

Tim Hardaway Jr is another player in this similar mold and archetype but Dick is a more consistent shooter than THJ, which was always the thing about the shooting of THJ and his inconsistencies.

Grayson Allen is another great player profile fit, though Dick has an athletic leg-up on Grayson Allen and is longer/taller.

These are the archetypes Dick is projected to fall into barring some unforeseen growth or development.

I edited the title. I understand 4th grade humor never fully goes away for any of us, but man is this the most tired joke on RealGM at this point. And its sets up the thread for low content responses.

The OP specifically is offering up Gradey Dick because of the following rationale.

The Raptors have a logjam at the 2G position

Yet your offer includes an undersized 2 guard.

Wendell Carter Jr + Future 2nd for Gradey Dick

Toronto adds a long-term Center who, historically, has spaced the floor.
Orlando adds an actual shooter to their roster to open up the court for Franz and Company.

I don't think WCJ has this kind of value given his down year and extension.

Make it the Denver 1st then.

I doubt Dick is worth a lottery pick in this draft.

I would also bet most teams look at Wendell Carter Jr and say "Variance" to his 3P shooting.

He might not be (I haven't spent enough time looking at this draft class TBH to say confidently one way or the other) but he's a solid young guy that Toronto likes, I don't think they're looking to move him for a collection of less valuable pieces unless it's a notable overpay.
