If John Collins opts out...
I'm curious who makes a run at him as a free agent and what contract do you think he would demand?
"Thibs called back and wanted more picks," said Jorge Sedano. "And Pat Riley, literally, I was told, called him a mother-bleeper and hung up the phone."

If he's opting out, then he's asking at least for 100/4, likely more, doubt he'll get it, so he'll just opt in.

Re: If John Collins opts out...
He's definitely recovered his stock a little bit, but I still think he's a MLE player on the open market. Most good teams would probably see him as a 5th starter or first guy off the bench type player.

I think this is a reasonable expectation. But maybe only 90mil of that 100 is fully guaranteed?
Do you think he can demand 90/4 with incentives?

Arent BRK and DET the only teams with space? I dont think either would be into paying 25M AV for Collins.
I think he opts in and is traded this offseason.

Who's even giving him 90/4? Unless he's re-signing with Utah, the only teams with that much cap space are Brooklyn and Detroit, and neither of them seem like logical landing spots for him.
Seems like the prohibitively likely outcome is that he opts in and then tries his luck in 2026 FA when more teams have money to spend.

Maybe?
He has 26.5 this year, full MLE next year is ~70/4, so that's ~100/5 realistic earning potential, I can see him prefering 90/4 this year.

yea 90/4 is preferable but i dont think he will get that offer this year.

Re: If John Collins opts out...
the teams don't have money, or do the Jazz extend him if they like him in the locker room, local guy etc. for something like 75/80 million for 4 years?? or does he opt to participate and they trade him...to the Spurs for Vassell?

Re: If John Collins opts out...
none of the cap space teams are giving him anywhere close to what he'd be opting out of
I wouldn't mind Charlotte making a S&T for him with Josh Green+late 2026 1st (worst of ORL/MEM/PHX/WAS) to Utah... maybe 3/60M? ... but there's no real reason for Collins to opt out of 1/27 for that contract

Best course of action is extending 60/3 with the Jazz on a descending deal, he gets paid, Jazz preserve the asset, Collins on 60/3 descending is an asset IMO.

There's no way Collins would agree to that. That's $33.5M in new money for 2 additional years, barely more than the MLE.

i think he means after the PO. so it would be 87M over 4

I'm in favor of keeping him long term. This kind of scenario would be ideal.

If John Collins opts out... He should fire his agent.
He is not getting over the MLE unless it's from the Jazz. Some teams won't even look at him as a MLE guy. That's how prohibitive the new CBA is.

Detroit imo seems like a decent landing spot for him. Not for 4 years but maybe 2.

Doesn't Tobias Harris already basically fill the role that Collins would for them?

Sure but hasn’t Collins played some small ball C? Or not ideal on D but covering the two forward spots together.
Its not a no brainer but its not an awful potential short term low hanging fruit either.
I mean it’s prob not super consequential for either team really but if it were me I wouldn’t rule it out is all I’m saying. Also more about the extra year for Collins than anything is my thought there.

Re: If John Collins opts out...
Yeah, we don’t want Collins. He’s a better athlete with a better jumper than Tobi, but Tobias is an iron man, better passer, better positional defender, and just fits what we’re doing better. And, frankly, when things are going this well, change is probably bad. I fully expect Harris to start at PF again next year.
