Scotto: Barrett's on the market

It seems like the NOP didn't want him and the market still see's him as a toxic contract. He's got elite 3rd option potential and his defense has been better as of late. But now the Knicks and the Raptors would be looking to dump him.

Has his value improved since he was on the Knicks?

What's the realistic return Toronto could expect?

"Elite third option potential" is kind of an oxymoron.

I doubt any bad teams would give any value for him.

Contending teams that have offsetting useless/expendable salary to offset his 2025-26 salary and no payroll crunch that taking on his 2026-27 salary hurts might offer some late draft pick compensation for him if they could use his skill set. But very rarely are contending teams lacking the volume scorer skill set, so he'd probably have to take a bench role for that and not sure any team wants to bank on a guy in their prime accepting that without being an issue.

Most likely, treadmill teams who care more about making a playoff run and getting some of that revenue would be interested. But only to a moderate price level. maybe a mid to late 1st depending on the quality (or lack of quality) and length of contract term in the salary being sent back.

Wish people added contract dwtails and such when making threads like these.

But guessing, based on iirc around 25m and several years, I think the market is bad. I dont think they can get neutral contracts. Might get equally bad but smaller ones to move. He is getting older, his game doesnt improve either. I jusr cant see a reason for bad teams to want him and cant see a reason for good teams either

His game has clearly improved in Toronto.

How many picks does it take to dump him.

Of course he is.

Who is willing to pay for what he offers?

Between his play this season, the Ingram acquisition and the fact Raps have 2 recent 1st round picks who play same position, they I’m sure will listen to offers

It will depend on where Raps land in draft. Barrett could be an asset to move up or land another 2025 1st. He’ll be in his mid 20 soon with 2 yea red left on his deal at around $28.5 million per so I think his max trade value is now.

I could see a handful of teams being interested.

I think the New Orleans package really shows just how poorly perceived RJ is around the league.

They preferred expiring and a mediocre back-up big who is overpaid for 2025-2026 in Kelly Olynyk to R.J. Barrett.

Woah, slow your roll buddy.

RJ isn't moving up in a draft, unless you think Brown + Olynyk were moving you up in a draft.

By all accounts RJ is worth LESS than expiring money, since Olynyk isn't expiring and is, by all metrics, slightly overpaid as a back-up big on his salary.

It didn't improve enough for New Orleans, who could have utilized another wing next to Zion, to prefer him over Kelly Olynyk and expiring money.

Grant Williams + Josh Green + Future 2nd for R.J. Barrett

Need a third team obviously here, but I think I offer Klay and Gafford?

No idea what’s that valued at? Seems neutral.

Because trading Ingram for RJ makes sense? Some of you really need to think before you type.

Yeah, they are different players.

Or do you think they are the same--in which case why the hell did Toronto add Ingram to RJ?

Some of you really need to think before you think about typing. 8-)

I love when people post what they feel like is a gotcha moment, but instead end up embarrassing themselves. Don't worry, I feel the second hand embarrassment as well, so thanks for that.

No, they're not the same player, but maybe you thought they were, I'm truly unsure now. However, New Orleans is at the bottom of the standings and getting expiring contracts for off season cap space was more valuable to them than a guy taking up almost 30 million worth of cap space for the next 2-3 seasons. I don't know, maybe that's a difficult concept for some to grasp.
