JJJ Supermax Part 2

Post#1 » by SNPA » Tue Mar 4, 2025 12:33 am

Texas chuck has graciously agreed to reopen this thread as it was closed in a manner that fell short.

The idea that JJJ wants the full supermax is reasonable and likely. The idea that the Grizz try to give him less is also reasonable and likely. If those play out JJJ, while getting more than somewhere else, would be signing for less than he could believe he earned. Maybe he is happy and it’s not an issue at all that he left, possibly, tens of millions in the table.

Or…maybe he signs it and is pissed at a small market that cheaped out on him and tells his agent to send the trade demand at the first viable point.

People just keep saying he doesn’t have leverage and has to take what the Grizz offer above a normal max. Ok. Maybe. But he does have options, that’s the point.

Beyond this, which is obvious, there was a second part…how can the Grizz field a team if JJJ gets let’s say around 60 per or the supermax? They’d have three guys taking up the cap. They could get a guy or two before the tax. Then…

Is Grizz ownership really going to go deep into the tax on a multi year basis?

And yes, as a fan of another team I’m curious what’s the breaking point and who might have to go.

Gobert was eligible and just signed over the max. I'd expect similar for JJJ.

Sort of siding with godaddy.

After the 2027 playoffs, if JJJ is on a supermax..

Memphis will likely be shopping one of their three stars very heavily. Will be interesting in 2.5 years.

2026-2027? Memphis can afford JJJ’s supermax and likely have tax room to get GG locked up on a bargain contract.

(I don’t expect him to demand a supermax and think he happily takes 5yr265-275 type money. Something like 15-25 mil more than a 4yr 8% max would be)

Desmond Bane isn't on a Max. I don't think they will have issues, but I also expect Ja Morant to have a shorter prime than many stars.

With the renegotiated extra money next year and higher raises on an extension even on a regular max JJJ is going to make some 30+ million more than he can with any other team. I really cannot see JJJ being upset with Memphis if they choose not to extend him a super max offer. A super max is crimpling if it not a top 5 player. After Memphis has used assets to clear salary to give him a raise when they didn't have to, JJJ really doesn't seem like the type of person that is going to hold a grudge and burn up a GTD 30 million in more money and play out his contract and walk if he doesn't get the super max or sign and then demand a trade. If money is his main factor then he signs in Memphis, even if it is not a super max.

JJJ is really good, but his anemic rebounding has always stood out to me. I'd prefer my top line big to be way more aggressive on that front. Hopefully he and the Grizzlies can find an acceptable middle ground.

Gobert signed a team friendly deal, not “just over the max.” Not really sure what you’re saying since you can’t really sign anyone over the max. The max is the max.

In Utah, when he qualified for the supermax.

Rudy Gobert existed before this season.

There are two Max's. The Max and then the SuperMax.

"The Max is the Max" isn't actually true since anyone can sign for the Max but only certain players qualify for the SuperMax.

Ahh fair. I thought you were referring to his recent contract as a way to measure the current market. Thanks for clarifying.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Memphis decides to trade JJJ this summer and proceed with Aldama and GG at 4.

Because I wasn’t asking you and the person I was asking had already responded/clarified their original post. You had no place in that conversation.

I didn't see their response when I quoted you, sorry I upset you so much!
