Spurs push their chips into Dallas
Spurs made the move to improve with Fox. They take another step to get climb higher.
Spurs send Vassell and Sochan, plus 25 FRP (Atlanta) and 27 FRP
Mavs send Anthony Davis
Mavs should have gotten a better deal for Doncic, but this helps make up for the it. Mavs get youth and a couple of picks.
Spurs take a chance on reducing AD's workload but add his defense to help Wemby.

Probably doesn't work for either team.

Doesn't seem like a very attractive offer. If that is all AD is worth, Dallas should keep him and look to add a stopgap guard to tide over until Kyrie returns. And maybe that is all AD is worth, but those players are unappealing and Atlanta not controlling those picks will likely never turn over a premium pick without some real luck.

The spurs don't need to make desperation moves like this. Davis turns 32 in a couple days and has a long injury history.
And there is no way the dallas front office admits their mistake and punts on Davis.

I think people are really overindexing on the sky falling in Dallas.
Kyrie's injury sucks, no doubt about it. But with an 8-12 month recovery period there's a chance he's back on the floor by Christmas. Getting a Collin Sexton or Anfernee Simons or even a Jordan Poole type player to keep the team afloat for a few months and then transition into a super-sub role still leaves Dallas with a pretty good chance of being a playoff team in 25-26. And once the playoffs start, anything can happen.
Is it a perfect plan? No. But it's better than selling AD and/or Kyrie for pennies on the dollar.

Re: Spurs push their chips into Dallas
I’m low on Sochan and Vassell. So I don’t love this package. But if you told me they both returned assets and that was built into it? Sure.
I think Atlanta gets the 8th seed. So the first isn’t great this year. And I think Dyson/Zac/Jalen/OO will continue to grow so the 2027 first doesn’t look as exciting to me as it does to others. I see Atlanta with a young developing core and a flawed-but-great star. I’m not too excited.
SAS might prefer to hold on to their players and add more picks. And that would be preferable here to me at least and there is a deal there. And I love Wemby/AD/Fox and if you keep Vassell, Sochan, and Castle you have a core around the three stars.
Really don’t see why Vassell/Sochan would be used instead of picks.

There is nothing desperate about paying this little for AD lol. Obviously the risk is there which would be why they could get him for so little. Maybe they decide the risk is too high, but never this price.
All depends on Wemby. Is the clot issue no concern? Then they should want to get as good as possible quickly because he's already a great player and with his body, you should assume a short window, not a long one.
If Wemby isn't right, then it doesn't really matter what they do, but yeah don't trade for AD.
But lets not call cheap offers desperate.

trading a decent young player and 2 picks for an aging and oft injured star is a desperation move . The guy has missed significant time in 6 of the last 7 season. He's on the wrong side of 30, so that isn't getting better.
Anyway, the "big 3" nba era is essentially over with the new cap structure. That's not how you are going to build a team that competes at the highest level for the rest of wemby's career. The spurs should be looking to improve rapidly, but that should be by adding some 2way perimeter players that compliment their 2 existing stars.

Re: Spurs push their chips into Dallas
again, if your argument is AD is too injury prone, cool.
If your argument is they should pursue 2-way wings(like literally every team lol) instead, cool.
But nothing desperate about giving up very expendable stuff for an elite player to play next to a guy you expect to be a top 10,top 5? player next year and the guard you just traded for to win now. Words do have actual meaning.

Re: Spurs push their chips into Dallas
Wembanyama will never be more valuable than he is on his current contract. I think there's a strong case for a move like this directionally, even if not for AD specifically. Restricting yourself to only aiming for young players just because Wemby is young seems like a mistake

Re: Spurs push their chips into Dallas
The value isn't bad, I think Dallas could probably get more honestly. But for SA I wouldn't make this deal. AD and Victor would make for a disgusting defensive duo but on offense the fit is not clean especially with Castle/Fox. AD is also going to be 32 and injury prone. I don't think he is on the right timeline for us

Well none of those guys are defensive players and Nico can't go back on his "defense wins championships" mantra either. Dallas should trade AD, Kyrie and Klay and see what PJ wants to do. Nico's window was 3-4 years including this one, and this year is shot. Next year is already shot with Kyrie's injury and AD's probable injury leaving the crappy tail-end of the window to try and win when they are all two years older. Plus if they keep them all they are going to try and trade off the last of our assets trying to get a lead guard and doubling down on their decisions. I don't want that because Dallas already traded away their future picks and their future talent (Luka).
What a colossal freaking failure by Nico and Kidd.

Re: Spurs push their chips into Dallas
Imagine trying to sell to your fanbase that you traded Luka Doncic for Mac Christie, a Lakers first, Vassell, Sochan, plus 25 FRP (Atlanta) and 27 FRP.
Yeah this isn't happening I think Nico is going to try to hold onto his now shaky job for as long as possible!
