Klay + 1st for Collin Sexton

To take place during the offseason:

Klay Thompson, Dwight Powell, LAL 2029 1st for Collin Sexton

Why for Dallas? Kyrie will be out until at least Christmas, and they need someone who can generate offense from the perimeter to keep the team afloat until his return. Sexton has proven adept in that role, and also has experience off the bench so he can transition into a sixth man role when KI returns. Including Powell in the deal allows Dallas to avoid being hardcapped at the first apron.

Lively / Gafford
AD / PJW / OMP
Martin / Marshall / Knueppel (draft)
Christie / Hardy
(Kyrie) / Sexton / Exum

Why for Utah? Continue accruing assets for guys who aren't part of the long-term plan. A lightly protected future 1st is a good return for Sexton.

[edit: changed DAL 2026 1st to LAL 2029 1st]

It'd have to be Lakers 29 1st, I'd still do it, I'd just add sending Klay for dead money + 2nds.

Dallas doesn’t own a 2027 first so can’t do the but I’d want to add small protection on the 2029 LAL first. Can roll over to 2030 Dallas first.

Just like top 6? Just in case?

I don't think anyone's giving up assets, even 2nds, for Klay at this point

I think someone should, regardless, I'd ask him where he wants to go and work out a deal to send him there, Mavs are paying unprotected 1st, which is an overpay for Sexton, so they can control the quality of the filler salary.

yeah if Dallas isn't doing KD and Kyrie is still under contract here, some version of this is what Dallas should be looking to do. I also think Klay is more movable than some others. He's no longer the defender he was, but he's big, still one of the most feared shooters in the league, and he has the allure of all those titles. And the contract isn't that big and he will be able to shoot both years. But if Utah would prefer Hardy and one of Marshall or Martin instead, that works for Dallas and they just keep Klay. But Utah should prefer Klay(or the 3rd team).

If there is an easy third team for Klay, but if Marshall is an option I far prefer him. We need decent wing-depth, but not guys who are so good they can't be moved to the bench if/when young players develop. Marshall is also easily flippable.

RE the idea of the deal, yes. We have too much guard depth, I love Sexton, but it's time to move him.

The tough thing is that replacing Klay with Marshall + Hardy is that it flips the deal from salary-negative to salary-positive for Dallas, which hard caps them at the first apron. They could get around it by adding OMP too but it starts to feel like it's better to just use Klay at that point.

Klay + Powell: $20.666M

Sexton: $19.175M

Hardy + Marshall + Powell: $19.0M

Oh I didn't check the math close enough. Yeah probably does need to be Klay then from the Dallas POV. I still think that 3rd team is not an issue, but most people seem to see him as a pretty big negative so I may be too homery optimistic on that?

Ehh he's a useful player making basically MLE money for 2 years. I don't think it would be that difficult to find a taker for him if all Utah was asking for was a useless expiring.

Marshall, Hardy, Powell, 2025 Dallas first for Sexton and Minn first?

Is that enough of a move up, considering the salary is positive value? (Ish)

The different in salary between 12th and 18th is enough if you wait the 30 days… if that’s even a thing still in the nba CBA.

Or you just use Martin instead of Marshall since he makes 500k more and find a team that wants him. I assume some team will?

I would imagine the Jazz would pay those 2 seconds to get the op deal done.

Would hope FranknCo would swap Bogdan's expiring for him.

Done, there's the deal.

UTA trades: Sexton
in: Bogdan Bogdanovic, 2029 LAL 1st [I also like the idea of swapping the MIN 1st for the DAL 1st if there is a reasonable move up there instead of a 1st 4 years from now]

DAL trades: Klay, 2029 LAL 1st
in: Sexton

LAC trades: Bogdanovic
in: Klay

2nds, etc. as needed.
