CHA/ORL bigs

Post#1 » by Skybox » Sat Mar 8, 2025 2:47 pm

Presuming: Mark Williams isn't happy about the LAL thing and CHA sees his long-term health as tough to build on...

ORL sends: Wendell Carter and DEN 25 frp
CHA sends: Mark Williams

Why CHA: cash him out and get a young, more versatile replacement who can also play next to another big, in the event of future picks or acquisitions. Add an immediate frp. Wendell has missed a fair amount of time too - but his injuries are not chronic and nowhere near as daunting as Mark's. CHA banks on unlocking the inside out, heady PnR talent of WCJ in a more featured offensive role. While WCJ isn't a "meet me at the rim" highlight-reel defender, he's an excellent positional defender, very capable of switching.

Why ORL: take a swing on a high-upside throwback C who had great chemistry with Paolo at Duke. Wendell's an excellent, versatile 2-way player, but his strengths are not really highlighted playing next to Paolo & Franz. Williams only has one more year, so even if his injury issues are too much, ORL creates needed salary space with Paolo, Suggs, Franz extensions kicking in hard. Ideally, Williams agrees to a modest extension and can thrive in limited minutes platooning with Goga at C. ORL has way too much money tied up in their bench players and needs to transition to a more top-heavy cap sheet.

This is a lot less value than what he was traded for. I can see his value being less but this is much less.

:o

…and what happened? The most win-now, Center desperate team in the league said “can’t do it”, despite having a 40 year old superstar who cares about nothing but rings, and moved forward with Jaxson Hayes. That makes me think there could be an issue here.

I suggest that ORL accept the risk, knowing they have Goga and Moe.

What would you add to balance your perception of value?

Orlando going from an injury prone center to an even more injury prone center will be so Orlando.

Maybe the DEN pick is overkill...imo, the WORST scenario is we get off of WCJ's deal and Williams retires after taking only $6.3m in salary next year. I don't dislike WCJ - but we can't afford his extension anymore...this is primarily a money deal...but, if Williams is healthy, it's a huge win for ORL. Even if we keep him on a minutes restriction behind Goga, the upside is huge...better to unload the other injury concern guys that make much more and have much lower upsides.

probably right...ORL's been through enough with Isaac, Fultz, etc...no team has been as decimated with injuries over the last 3 years. Why invite more heartache. Your sympathy is appreciated.
