2025 Off-Season Hypothetical - Mavs Fire Nico: Mavericks 2025 Off-Season

Hypothetically, Nico Harrison is fired by the Mavericks...
If they pivoted to a full rebuild, what does that look like in Dallas?

Off the top of my head, just dealing with the Texas teams makes sense.
Given the injury, how many picks would need to go Dallas' way in an opted-in Kyrie for Jalen Green and Jock Landale trade?
Jeremy Sochan, Harrison Barnes, Devin Vassell, and how many picks = AD?
Could they flip Vassell, Sochan, and Green for more picks somewhere?
Vassell (or Green, I guess) and Sochan moving to Detroit seems like a good way to acquire another young player or asset.

Whenever I play this out..
You keep Kyrie on a 4yr160-180 or a5yr200 type deal.
You trade AD for the best piece possible. Whatever that is.
You try to get an asset for Gafford, Naji. Try to clear some salary (Klay / Martin / salary returned in AD trade) if it doesn’t cost an asset.
If PJ is open to an extension, you do it. Whether it’s one year or 4... If not but he seems into a (front loaded) long term deal, then you risk UFA.
Lively/2026 first/AD trade return centerpiece/2025 first/Christie become the core, PJ/Kyrie get paid to try and help them be respectable.

Devin Vassell, Harrison Barnes, Jeremy Sochan and some good picks for AD?
Is Wemby/AD/Fox a good fit?

Vegas won't admit the mistake. But if they did sell everything. Live through the years you don't control your picks.

AD to Rockets for Suns 27'29 + Mavs pick 29 + one prospect.
Do right by Kyrie and trade him to where he wants.
Trade the prospect from HOU to CHO for 27 and tank, hopefully in 28 you're good enough to not give top 10 pick to OKC.

Sell everything, tank hard from the start, and pick at the top in 2026. I'll start with something unrealistic, but I think you get the idea. KI+AD to the Magic for Wagner/Black/Cole/Isaak/Goga/Howard/Harris. The Magic become an instant candidate. KI/Suggs/KCP/Paolo/AD. The Mavs get a young star, around whom they rebuild + some interesting pieces. Trade Gafford to the LAKERS for Maxi/Milton (Cut) + Lakers 31. PJ to the Kings for Carter + FRP?? More realistically, extend KI (then trade him wherever he wants) and trade AD to Houston for a rebuilding package. Do I think the other trades
+- work?

I kind of like Jalen Green, Jock Landale and '29 Mavs 1st for Kyrie even with the injury to KI... I think Houston is going to be patient with it and on the court they get a huge upgrade as a reward. The Mavs could use Jalen Green as a tank commander and get their pick back.
I like AD to the Spurs a lot too...
Some kind of concept like...
Barnes, Ivey, Fontecchio, Stewart and Spurs picks to Dallas
Sochan and Vassell to Detroit
AD to San Antonio
Move forward with...
Lively/Washington/Naji/Green/Ivey with a ton of veteran depth, their own pick this year and in '26... picks from the Spurs... their own '29 pick back.
I'd call that a win

Hate it for the Rockets, they don't need to go for mystery boxes.

DAL should fire him. Don’t how many crunches he can do.

If NOP selects a guard at the top of the Draft..
Gafford/Cole Antonhy/Hardy to NOP
Klay to MAGIC
Mccollum to MAVS..
AD/Lively/Powell
PJ/O-Max/K.Edwards
Marshall/Martin
Christie/FA/Draft
Mccollum/B.Williams/*KI
FA..
B.Brown
K.Edwards

NOP owes something here, heavily protected 1st or 2-3 2nds...
I prefer Sexton TBH, his cap hit is small, basically Gafford+Hardy cover his salary, Gafford can sent elsewhere for a pick.

Would the LAKERS do Maxi/Milton+Laker 31 to the Jazz? With Gafford+some SRP(Utah) to LA and Sexton to the Mavs?

31 is too much and too limiting.
Since Mavs and UTA hold Lakers picks, they can send them 27 and 29 back and LAL send 26, 28 (top 4 protected) to UTA and 30 to Dallas
Or LAL can send Knecht + 2nd instead of a 1st.

I don't understand why people believe that Nico wasn't acting under orders. It seems pretty clear that this was ownership's call.

Why? You think they've been lying all the numerous times they've told the media that Nico singlehandedly came up with the idea and sold ownership on it over months?
In some ways this would be
better if it was a league wide conspiracy to gift Luka to the Lakers, because that just implies it was maliciously coordinated in stealth. This way it just seems like everyone running the Mavs is a moron.

Because that's all the reporting was and in retrospect, it explains many personel moves that didn't have an explanation before.

I really wouldn’t trade Kyrie while he is injured.
Give him a 4yr front loaded deal (180-188?) and just tank.. if he wants a trade after he’s healthy, go ahead. If he’s healthy and happy playing with a young roster, even better.
I think it’s much more likely the team trades for a guard that can create offense but also play with Kyrie once he’s healthy.
I don’t think Dallas can get closer to a contender long term by trading AD, so they really should look at adding another 30-33 year old type to finish their career with Kai/AD? I wouldn’t want to be aggressive to the point of KD but understand it.
Though trading AD and tanking hard is my preferred choice honestly. Lively, 2026 first, 2025 first with AD’s return is a young core of some level. And pay PJ and Kyrie on front loaded deals?
Maybe wiggle a good amount of cap space in 2027 before paying Lively? Not star chasing just maybe another vet.

From post-trade interviews it seems that both ownership and Nico were firmly in support of the deal. Maybe one had to be convinced but by the end both were in agreement.
I do wonder if the fan backlash gets severe enough do the owners through Nico under the bus (since billionaire owners could never be the problem).
