Lauri to DAL

EDIT: subbed PJ Washington in per jay, perhaps it should be Naji Marshall?
DAL trades: Klay Thompson, Daniel Gafford, Caleb Martin, PJ Washington, OMP, 2025 DAL 1st (12), 2029 LAL 1st
UTA trades: Lauri Markkanen
Dallas gets a good second option with Kyrie out. Kyrie-Christie-Lauri-AD-Lively should be pretty deadly when everyone is healthy, or they can run Kyrie-Christie-Marshall-Lauri-AD; basically, they'd have nice optionality, a lot of size, and more shooting.
Utah leans all the way into the tank, they get a lottery pick in a good draft, a future pick, and some players I think can be flipped for either expirings or some value (Gafford would def. have a market). I don't think it is the best *hypothetical* trade for Lauri, but I do think it would be competitive and we just need to rip the bandaid off if tanking instead of wasting Lauri's prime.

No take backs.
I really don’t want to trade PJ, but think Dallas has to include him/his value here right?

Maybe? Or *Marshall* (somehow I always confuse him and Kenrich Williams)? I think 12 + future first is not the worst value in the world. If we can get another first in value from flipping PJ or Williams then it makes more sense.

I like it - but Klay has to be rerouted. Cant see DAL doing him like this even if their managment is insane.

I thought about trying to find the additional teams but decided that it was best to think what the core of the deal would be. I think Utah would try to flip everyone incoming except maybe OMP. I like Jay's suggestion of PJ to balance, too.

FWIW I think ideally the deal becomes:
DAL trades: Klay Thompson, Daniel Gafford, Caleb Martin, PJ Washington, OMP, 2025 DAL 1st (12), 2029 LAL 1st
in: Lauri Markkanen
UTA trades: Lauri Markkanen
in: matching salary from team X & Y, OMP, 2025 DAL 1st (12), 2029 LAL 1st, Team X 1st
Team X trades: salary, first
in: Daniel Gafford, PJ Washington, (Caleb Martin?)
Team Y trades: expiring
in: Klay

Yeah, sad but just don’t see AD, Lauri and PJ not overlapping too much to be worth paying in 18 months. Maybe I’m in minority?

IMO I think it would work, the rotation could basically be (shuffling guys around depending on who you want to start/matchups, etc.):
C: AD 20/Lively 28
PF: PJ 28/AD 12/Lauri 8
SF: Lauri 24/???
Lauri is best as a power forward but still quite good at small forward. It would work really well when Kyrie is healthy as a creator. But yah, it might make more sense having PJ outgoing just for the sake of getting Lauri more minutes at power forward.

I don't understand the point of this deal for Utah.

Agreed. The value is likely in the right ballpark, but I don't think that this is the direction the Jazz braintrust would go.

I don't know, I think Dallas has bigger holes to plug than investing all of its best assets in a position it has very well covered (AD/PJ/Marshall/Klay/Martin/O-Max) it's an elite 3/4 rotation in quality and depth... in my opinion Dallas should make a package with the most expendable/replaceable players (Gafford/Martin/Hardy/Powell/O-Max) + the picks and turn them into the best point guard possible, if he fits with KI all the better... it's a shame Dejonte Murray is hurt, because I think he would fit that profile.

We suck. We shouldn't be investing more in players over 25, they need to be traded for assets. We won't stop sucking for several years. It is awful to watch, but it is what it is. I'd rather lean in than intentionally sit players.

Ok, but this isn't a future centric package. Why are you trading for so many vets?

It's a lottery pick, a future first, and guys that will be traded later. I'm not sure how it isn't future centric? There has to be some kind of filler.

Defense wins championship so Nico says no!
Don't get the idea for Dallas tbh because they are likely gonna miss Kyrie next season and trading PJ + Gafford + Klay is losing all their depth so you are basically trading some value/picks for a team that can't win next season and is on a tough spot even for 2027. It would make sense for them if Kyrie was healthy but that's not the case anymore.

It's a great value, if AD is willing to play center...

I think this needs to turn into a three or four team trade to get rid of those vets UTA is acquiring in a hurry or else you’ll be in a worse situation tanking wise than before.

Just not enough of a believer in him to give all this up. Also, don't think he holds this much value on this contract, but I'm skeptical of guys with one outlier season with this many years at a considerably lower level. Not paying for the peak year, when its so unlikely I get it.

*yet again, TWO seasons, not one
