Simple trade: Portland/Philly: George for Grant+Simons

Post#1 » by mhd » Sun Apr 20, 2025 8:10 am

Simple deal:

76ers convert PG13 into a needed PF in Grant (who is overpaid regardless) and a scoring wing in Simons.
Portland consolidates the useless Grant (and allows Deni to be starting PF no questions asked) and Simons into PG13 while saving roughly 5 million in salary next year. Blazers are probably not going to attract any FAs with the difference in salary between PG13 & Grant (both expire at the same time), so they go with the tested vet to play the Scottie Pippen role (ala the Blazers in 2000) in a low-pressure environment out of the national spotlight.

Philly needs to incentive this given how bad George's contract is relative to Grant.

I don't hate this on paper, but there needs to be a conversation with PG before hand on the Blazers end, and I question what it actually accomplishes for Philly.

Easy no from Portland. George is clearly going downhill. That salary of PG13’s is ridiculous to take on without incentive. Blazers would be much better off letting Simons expire and not having $20M extra on the books for 2 years. His health the last few years and performance this past year also don’t convince me he is any better than Simons and Grant anyway in terms of helping the team win.

As a side note, OP, this feels like blatant changing what you are selling depending on which side bends it to justifying. You phrase $5M in saving as a positive for Portland one year, but then taking on $20M per year extra for the 2 following years doesn’t matter because Portland doesn’t attract FAs anyway (btw, salary is important for trade flexibility too so it definitely still matters), You also say Grant accomplishes a need for justifying on one end, yet call him useless to justify him going away on the other end. So which is it, is he useful or useless? These justifications just aren’t consistent and feel disingenuous to convince people to be onboard.

I think you send Simons to some third team for whatever asset he is worth? Asset to Portland and lesser salary to Philly.

Philly should be comfortable with Maxey, McCain, Grimes and whatever deeper bench guards.

No idea if that’s KCP+(?) or Klay+salary+(?).. or some other version. But just seems like a third team is needed.

Agreed.
Not close IMO. No need to discuss any further

Hard pass for POR and PHI will not want to pay what it would take to make up the difference. I wouldn’t either.

PHI has to hope PG can rehab some value.

This is just terrible for Portland. He's probably got the worst contract in the league.

Given the ages and injury histories, I think the odds of Grant bouncing back are better than PG. Easy pass for Portland.

Jerami Grant has 2 years and 66 million left on his contract, which is not great but not terrible either, while George has 3 years and 162 million left, which is borderline if not outright untradeable. It'd take some crazy incentive for any team to take on that contract.

All of these PG trades don’t work for either team. Portland would rightfully want more because of the term, but the Sixers are also better off just hoping he bounces back enough to change the calculus next year. They’re not in a position to pay to dump it.

They both have player options for the 2027-2028 season. I guess Grant is slightly more likely to opt out? But neither deserve their player options..

The 20 mil a year a year and the season PG just had is enough to make it terrible for Portland

I misread Grant's contract, in all fairness it's either 2/66 or 3/103 depending on how you feel about that third year. But given his age and the exploding cap, I think his contract is still a hell of a lot better than PG's, who is a lock to pick up that third year.

I would need a pick swap this year (5 for 10) and a future heavily protected FRP to do this for PDX.

That seems like about the minimum I'd consider accepting from Portland's perspective, but there's no way I'd offer it if I were Philly.

I don't think there's an overlap between what PDX would require to make this swap and what Philly would offer to get it done

The 76ers adding Simons would make no sense(by the way Simons is too small to be a true wing player). How many minutes would he even get on this team? He's not playing ahead of Tyrese Maxey for very obvious reasons. He's not playing ahead of Jared McCain. Maybe him and Grimes are battling for minutes, but the front office would much rather see what they have in Grimes and see if he sustains anything remotely close to the level of play he has been producing at post trade deadline instead of basically being forced to cut minutes to fit in Simons.

ORL would discuss a trade for PG...if McCain is in his pocket

Maybe something like:

Portland trades: Simons, Grant, #10 for PG, #5
Orlando trades: KCP, #16 for Simons
Philly trades: PG, #5 for KCP, Grant, #10, #16

Of course Philly is very unlikely to end up at #5 post-lottery, either moving into the top-4 or moving down - perhaps down far enough to lose their pick to OKC.

George is pretty much unreadable at this point.

It’s not just his injury history, which is bad enough, or the fact that he’s going downhill, which is undeniable, or his contract, which is atrocious. It’s the fact that on top of all of those 3 deal-killer traits already on his resume, he very clearly doesn’t care at all about the game anymore and he’s had issues everywhere he’s been. He’s not even some great teammate that could redeem some of the other bad qualities.

He doesn’t bring a single positive thing to a team.
