RJ to the Mavs

Post#1 » by Thaddy » Sun Apr 20, 2025 9:48 am

Draft night deal.

Barrett for Washington, Gafford, 2025 1st.

Lively / Jones
Davis / Martin
Barrett / Marshall
Thompson / Christie
Irving / Hardy

RJ Barrett is a strong upside swing. He’s not a star, but he could be the third best player on a contending team if developed right and playing with Davis and Irving would make him look better.

Poeltl / Gafford / Maluach
Barnes / Washington / Fleming
Ingram / Mogbo
Agbaji / Dick / Walter
Quickely / Shead

Toronto adds 4 bigs to the mix who bring a mixture of shooting and defense to give them more stretch capability. They draft Maluach with their own pick and add Fleming with the Mavs first. Ingram replaces Barrett's scoring and Agbaji gives them a POA defender so Barnes can focus on help defense.

Feels a lot closer without the lottery pick. While I don't think he's a terrible contract I don't see RJ returning quality players and a 1st round pick. If you're getting a 1st - and especially a pretty good one - for RJ then the matching salary is going to be essentially dead-weight contract(s).

PJ...because of his size/position/defense and contract, he is more valuable on his own (in my opinion)...I would do Gafford+Martin for RJ...I wouldn't pay, nothing more.

Yeah that pick isn’t going anywhere for RJ…I happen to like him, but that salary vs efficiency puts him in older and less athletic than Jalen Green value territory. RJ’s like a troublesome family member…TOR fans trying to unload him for future flexibility but bristling to defend his value when his value is questioned.

Count me among those who would rather have PJ than RJ on their contracts.

Gafford/Martin is a fair offer. If we draft a wing then i would do that trade.

I think from Dallas perspective this is reasonable, but a third team would need to be involved to turn Gafford into an asset.

For example, could the Lakers offer Brooklyn a future unprotected swap for Pick #26 (Brooklyn’s lowest value of 4 1’s this year). The Lakers would trade Kleber for Gafford, and Kleber would end up in Toronto with Martin and the pick with Dallas getting Barrett.

This future unprotected swap for low variance pick has been done recently by Dallas and the Clippers with OKC.

I like Barrett’s fit in Dallas, but not at the expense of Washington. Barrett gives Dallas another guy who can put the ball on the floor and score, something they desperately need. Dallas also has a bunch of different looks they can use with Barrett - big with Davis/Lively/PJ upfront or small with either Thompson or Christie in the backcourt.

He’s not worth PJ and a lotto pick, but for the right price I really like this fit for Dallas.

Doing some math here - Gafford + Martin + Powell is enough to make the math work and hard caps Dallas at the 2nd apron with just north of 10mm of Kyrie signs for the current number he has on his option.

Irving/Christie/Washington/Davis/Lively
Hardy/Thompson/Barrett/Marshall
Williams/Prosper
Lotto Pick

Dallas would have +/- $10.5mm for 2-3 roster spots including the taxpayer MLE - which I would use on a point guard like Tyus Jones, Schroeder or Malcolm Brogdon as a placeholder until Kyrie gets back.

I wouldn’t mind adding RJ.

The OP is really terrible for Dallas.

Would not trade any of those pieces for RJ
Asking for all of them doesn't feel realistic at all.

Huge overpay for RJ.

RJ has Anfernee Simons value.

Gafford and Martin for RJ isn't great for Toronto. RJ is the best player in the trade and they don't get any youth or potential pieces back. The usual structure the Raptors look for is a expiring + pick and/or prospect.

If the first rounder is over kill what about OMP?

I don’t know if Dallas would want to do Gafford+salaru for RJ, but if they did.. OMP isn’t a deal breaker at all imo. I don’t think low end prospects are held on as tightly irl as they are here.

I didn’t check the numbers, but would have to include Hardy (and maybe Powell) there.

Though I think in an RJ trade, Klay should be involved. So Gafford/Klay for expirings and probably a second? Maybe two seconds? And then if Toronto really wants OMP, sure.

Maybe Martin, #39 (TOR) to a 3rd team and the Raptors move up 15 picks or so. Martin is redundant in Toronto.

Like would Orlando do #24 + Cole Anthony for #39 + Caleb Martin? Save like 4M, add a playable wing? Maybe if they did something like KCP + #16 + whatever else for the scoring guard they need and they have to save some money and replace KCP as a veteran 3+D option?

Toronto would be lucky to get expirings for RJ. I get that he has been better there, but he is still really bad for a guy that needs to have the ball and is paid what he is. If he were paid like a 6th man I think he'd have a good market.

i think its the other way around actually. He was really good last year and parts of this year when he didnt need to have the ball. He was much better when playing off scottie/IQ etc. the bunch of injuries early on forced him into 1st option role that as you mentioned he was terrible at. I haven't heard anything about him demanding the ball and he seems to be on board with playing off ingram/barnes next year too.

Still needs to work more on his defense and FT shooting though, so i dont think very highly of him and expirings/2nd(s) is about right imo

I just don't think a team that wants to be good should be trying to trade for RJ.
