Testing the Market - Austin Reaves
Just trying to get a feel for what his value would be.
Contract positives - his low cap number is easier to work into a trade for cap purposes
Contract negatives - (a) his maximum extension is below his market value so he’s unlikely to sign and (b) he will have a lot of leverage to ask for a max or close to it if a team gives up a big haul here.
This is just to gage his value to see how the Lakers can rebuild the roster around Luka.

Re: Testing the Market - Austin Reaves
I wouldn't rule out extension, just like in other similar cases (PJ Washington, Naz Reid to lesser extent), these players can take more in FA, but they may want to secure 80% of the money immediately, nothing in certain in this league.
I think the Lakers should trade him if they get overpay offers (Lively from Dallas, Sexton + Kessler from UTA ++), but should keep him if they aren't offered that.

Well, what would the Lakers be targeting in a return package?

I really like the idea of a Reaves for Herb Jones type trade.
Rest in peace Mamba. There'll never be another Kobe.

Re: Testing the Market - Austin Reaves
I think a lot of what happens depends on if LBJ opts in right. If he opts in they have minimal flexibility, assuming they want to sign DFS.
If LBJ opts out and signs elsewhere or retires the can take back more Salary for Reeves. Otherwise it has to be pretty tight. (Close to his salary)

Re: Testing the Market - Austin Reaves
Reaves, Kleber, Vando to ORL
For…Wendell Carter, KCP
*this only works if Reaves’ agency can work out a realistic extension, say $25m per
Or…Reaves to ORL for Goga, Cory Joseph, #16

Reaves for Wendell Carter is a fair swap for both teams. Fit a need that both teams need. Similar contracts too.

Wendell Carter is so much worse than Reaves, they've gotta add to that

The hell you talking about? He played the most games (68) of his entire career. He had up down season getting injured early, losing his starting spot, working way back in but he ended the year and playoffs with solid numbers. HIs 3pt shooting was what got his this year.....but so did our entire team as we were cursed. Austin Reaves is far from perfect. He is a defensive cone that teams plan to attack on. Your not getting a big haul for him.

Reaves will still fetch a pick or 2. Can't say the same for WCJ with the year he's had.

Nobody is trading Reaves for Carter straight up.

I don't disagree, but Ainge is the GM of the Jazz, they don't need to sell him... it will have to be an above-market offer, especially because Utah controls the LAKERS' FRP at 27 and I assume they don't want to devalue themselves.

Re: Testing the Market - Austin Reaves
I doubt he is traded.
I recognize that he is a superfluous luxury as the 3rd option alongside Luka and Lebron, and that, in the short term, the Lakers would probably be better off with trading some of his offensive impact for a better defender, at least in the playoffs. But that dynamic only exists for another year or so. Pretty soon, Lebron will retire or decline, and Reeves will become much more necessary as the 2nd option alongside Luka. Also, Reeves is very important in the regular season because Lebron and Luka will often need to take nights off.
Ultimately, I don't think the Lakers have enough talent to win in the Lebron era, so they're better off positioning for a longer run in the Luka era. That means keeping Reeves.
I think the Lakers will mostly just take steps to acquire a Clint Capela tier defensive center and then try and run it back again.

Re: Testing the Market - Austin Reaves
I think they will run into the same problem with Austin Reaves as they did with D'Angelo Russell last year if they were to looking to trade him. He's not good enough to be a major piece on a contender, but good enough to point he would effect a team's tank. His regular numbers looked good, but he was basically unplayable in the playoffs. In ether case, any trade value that he did have completely vanished with performing as bad as he did in the playoffs vs the Timberwolves.
