DET/MIA/3rd Team?

Post#1 » by vege » Sun May 4, 2025 2:15 am

I Believe it's likely that Detroit brings Schröder and Beasley back, and maybe even Tim Hardaway Jr. With Ivey's return, that's way too many guards on the roster.

Simone Fontecchio was unplayable this season, he either had a hot shooting stretch last season, or he does not fit what JB is doing in Detroit. Either way he must be replaced and Detroit should be trying to find their PF of the future.

Detroit have too many guards and need a PF, I see Ausar and Ron as 2/3's.

Tobias could start for another year or two if needed, so they have time to develop Jović and he would fit well if he improves a little bit.

Sasser is the superior player right now, he does have one extra year under contract and he is cheaper compared to Jović, however, Sasser is an undersized scorer (SG), he is older than Jović and he cannot run a team.

That's why Detroit traded for Schröder at the deadline.

I am not sure if that's a skillset Miami really need. I think Sasser would look good in Orlando or Houston, would those teams be interested in him? and what could they possibly give Miami so they're convinced to trade Jović?

FWIW,

Marcus Sasser ranked 133 in EPM this season he was in the 67th percentile in Offensive EPM, 79th percentile in Defensive EPM (he's a good POA defender) and 74th overall EPM.

Nikola Jović ranked 250 in EPM 52th percentile in Offensive EPM, 55th percentile in Defensive EPM and 52th percentile overal in EPM, not bad considering he is younger than Sasser and have a more desirable skillset.

I have Jovic worth more. One's a 6th-7th man on a playoff team, the other couldnt get any minutes in the playoffs at all. I think Kyle Anderson is the more attainable target from Miami if you want a backup 4

Sasser is an undersized SG, we had the #2 in 6th man of the year ahead of him in the rotation, that's why he didn't break the rotation in the playoffs.

Anderson can't shoot, therefore he doesn't fit in Detroit.

Detroit have 15 2nds.

yea my point was more so Jovic is needed on the heats team since plays significant minutes for them. Don't think they will sell him for 2nds

Detroit should aim higher at PF because the player will replace Harris next year, I don't think Jovic is better than Fontechio.

I dont know if it fits here or derails, but have felt since the trade deadline MPJ would be a good addition for Detroit . Not sure the trade fit, but the spacing/scoring alongside Cade seems like it'd be a good fit. I know there's always the injury risk, but he's been fine 2 years running. Contract is big, but just 2 years, not gonna cripple them by any means.

I think it takes a 3rd team that gives Denver the pieces to make it worthwhile to trade MPJ (and they don't want him for themselves), but I like the goal for Detroit.

I think Tobias is too important for Detroit, MPJr's defense is the main issue here. His shooting would be great sure, but Duren is too inept on defense, we can't have an inept defensive PF next to him.

I'd like something around Sasser/Fontecchio +++ for DJJr tho he would look good in Detroit.

What I don't see is DET bringing back Schroeder and Hardaway because

it creates the too many guards problem you are now trying solve

Just don't bring them back, use the money saved from their expiring contracts to sign a PF to fill that need and maybe Beasley then there are plenty of minutes for Thompson, Ivey and Sasser

Miami's going to pass. Jovic is important to us. He adds a uniqueness to what we do. We got a taste of it this year, especially in the rare instances that Spo played him with Bam and Ware. A guy that size who can handle and shoot as well as he does has value. While nice, Sasser plays a role we don't need, unlike Jovic. I can see us trading him, but as a sweetener in a larger deal.

Maybe I'm a bit confused, you called Fontecchio unplayable in the OP but if you throw him and an undersized SG who couldn't scratch the rotation in the playoffs together you get a playable defensive wing? Seems like the '+++' is going to be carrying a lot of weight in that equation.

I like DJJr and thought about him as a target but there’s too much overlap with Ausar & Ron Holland.

We need someone that can play the 4 and shoot like Santi Aldama, Jabari Smith jr, or Naz Reid.

Wasn’t there a post where Indy basically gave Obi to Detroit for cap space?
Also, wouldn’t mind having Sasser back in Houston. Former cougar is solid and could be a career backup guard for Udoka.
Sasser to Houston. A second from Houston to Indy. Obi to Detroit.

Toppin is definitely an upgrade for Detroit.

It seems that Indy will be in need of some savings with a Turner extension on the horizon.

I’d be for it if there isn’t a path for the Pistons to acquire Santi Aldama, Jabari Smith jr, Tari Eason or Naz Reid. Obi is probably a distant 5th on my list.

Fontecchio had a down season but damn I would jump all over him if his value has dropped this low.

Toppin is clueless on defense and he makes way too much money for what he provides, we need better than him.

Sasser is a legit NBA rotation player. He should be worth more than a 2nd, you likely need to pay a real asset to get him.

I agree that Sasser is a solid NBA player, but it’s hard to sell him as value when you don’t play him yourself. And yes, I know the reasons we didn’t play him.

He’s PG-sized and can’t run an offense. He’s a good defender but isn’t very big, which makes him unswitchable and vulnerable. He has a nice handle and a pretty nice shot. Basically, he’s a slightly lesser version of Cam Thomas who actually guards people.

Any interest in a barely used Xavier Tllman for a top 55 protected 2nd?
