Jabari Smith Jr. & Tari Eason Contract Extensions?

Post#1 » by GreekAlex » Sun May 4, 2025 7:05 pm

What are the Rockets plans for Jabari Smith Jr. & Tari Eason this summer?

Do they offer them extensions or have them play out their 4th season?

If so at what salary/ length?

I’m looking for Detroit to target one of the 2 and I’m curious who Rocket fans are prioritizing.

Ivey for Jabari is kind of interesting

I think the Pistons will only keep 2 out of 3 when it comes to Beasley, Hardaway jr and Schröder and Ivey will absorb all of those minutes so he’s going to play too large of a role to trade him.

If he doesn’t look like a fit with the new found chemistry, this could be an option at the trade deadline.

As of now, I was hoping the Pistons could target Smith or Eason with picks instead.

Jabari isn’t even averaging 5 shot attempts per game in the playoffs. I’m more interested in hearing Houston’s expectations for Smith and Eason after their rookie contracts are up.

Houston will have a salary squeeze at some point, unless they can make a consolidation trade. Both are phenomenal and will be highly coveted.

I speculate they will offer them extremely team friendly extensions with hopes to keep both. If they don't accept, Rockets likely start looking at who will have cap space in their free agency period, and set risk profiles for what they could realistically be offered in free agency.

An area of opportunity that has not been fully fleshed out in the new CBA environment is the week long free agency moratorium and how to weaponize restricted free agency. I have a hard time believing teams with cap space will sit out negotiating deals all week with hopes to sign a RFA, who might or might not be matched. If a RFA is matched, then what is plan B? All other free agents will likely be gone. Rockets will need to assess the risk with taking these guys to RFA.

If they ultimately determine that there is too much apron risk, I imagine they will auction up both and take the best single pick package offered for one, and keep the other. Both would be worth several future firsts.

You gave a great perspective and insight but you lost me at: “Both would be worth several future firsts”.

Several future firsts? That’s more than it took to acquire some of the recent all-NBA players that were traded.

I don’t even think the teams like OKC that have tons of firsts would invest them on guys that aren’t clear upgrades over what they currently have.

I'd want to know what their market value is as RFAs before thinking about a consolidation trade.

Phenomenal? That’s a strong word but both are good, young players with upside and I agree that restricted free agency should be utilized more.

I mean if it’s for the right player the Rockets should consolidate.

As the Rockets GM, what would you offer them this offseason that might make them think twice about waiting another season and betting on themselves?

It'd have to be for a very specific player that can fill the holes left on defense and rebounding by trading Eason and Bari.

I'm not good at predicting contract extensions.

The premise of this post wasn’t to trade both.

Who do you value more out of the 2 if you can’t afford to keep both?

2 young non-max guys that got resigned by their teams last off season were Okongwu & Trey Murphy.

Their first seasons of their new contracts started at $14M and $25m respectively.

Is it safe to say with the cap going up, both players are looking for something in the middle of that range?

If I had to choose who the more important player is for the Rockets, it's Jabari Smith. We can't let that defensive skillset go. There's maybe a handful of players that shoot, defend, and rebound at 6'10" while also being able to scale down to SF and scale up to C.

It would be pretty cool to see Eason in Detroit forming the Terror Twins with Ausar.

Agreed. He’s definitely my first choice as a Pistons fan.

I think he would slot perfectly next to Duren & Stewart as a big rotation.

What draft pick value in this draft would you put him at?

Or other people, where do you put him?

Kings should go for Smith. If they plan on two more seasons of Sabonis I’d be ok if they moved the Spurs 27 and Minny 31.

Sabonis/JV
Smith/LaRavia?/?
Keegan/LaRavia?/Carter
Zach/Ellis/Carter
?(DDR trade)/Monk

I haven't followed the draft enough to say. He's in the Al Horford camp of excellent role players that winning teams would love to have, except he's 22.

I didn’t mean necessarily trading both.
