IND - SAC: DeMar to the Pacers

This might be odd given that Pacers are in the middle of a good playoff run, but watching this team, they could really use a vet big guard/forward who attacks the basket. Turner and Siakam spread the front court well.

Sacramento has been looking for a PG, and Nembhard looks ready to run his own team (6 APG as a secondary ball handler these playoffs, and during the season when playing atleast 30MPG).

DeMar DeRozan for Andrew Nembhard & Ben Sheppard

Sheppard can be a young SG to aid a youngish Kings team. Nembhard and Lavine make more sense as a backcourt than Lavine and Demar.

Pacers get a 20/4/4 guy who can take a step back in the pecking order. He was almost voted CPOY twice, and he can help them win the East next year.

This is terrible. Nembhard is better than DeRozan.

What exactly is the rationale here? We trade our POA defender and secondary playmaker for the corpse of DeMar DeRozan?

I highly doubt the Pacers are giving up Nembhard at all. Let alone for Demar DeRozan. Nembhard is immensely important to what they want to do. He may be the 2nd most important player on the team, with his abilities being a perfect match for Tyrese Haliburton and Rick Carlisle. This deal would make Indy much worse on the court.

Plus this would be absolutely killer to Indy's financial books.

DDR doesn't have near this trade value or positive on court impact and doubt the Pacers want him on that contract with Turner up for big money.

If there was a trade if would be like Obi/TJM for DDR and even then I have the pacers passing.

I feel bad for Kings fans. Promising season a year ago, then they just f—ed it up really bad. Does anyone want DDR or Lavine?

I assume someone would do filler + a first (not a valuable one) for LaVine and someone would probably do expirings and maybe a 2nd or two for DeRozan. But yah, the roster is a disaster.

Pacers are too smart to want anything to do with Demar, even if he was offered to them for free.

It's time to give up the notion that DeMar holds any value in the open market. Sorry Raptor and Kings fans.

Yikes, this is a massive overpay. I honestly can’t think of a single team that would want DDR

What does this have to do with Raptors fans? Toronto sent him out 5 years ago. Maybe you're sore about you overpaying FVV? lol

This is purely about adding a new dimension to the Pacers which they currently lack (a free throw generating G/F, who can work off Hali-Siakam-Turner's spacing). We can all debate about DDRs trade value, which is the point of the forum.

There is no debate to be had.

As others have said, there’s no debate to be had. Nembhard is simply much more valuable than DDR. He’s much more important. Add in Indiana’s salary structure and proximity to the tax, and swapping for DDR is the kind of move that makes it much less likely Indy can re sign Turner.

But if you really want to add a free throw generating G/F to Indy’s roster, they already have a pretty good one in Bennedict Mathurin. DDR may be better, with worse range and an increased focus on the midrange, but Mathurin is already on the roster and cheaper.

There’s nothing here for Indy to discuss. Just a total non starter in any way, even with Nembhard removed. Salary matching will require Indy to give up too many useful players.

This trade is poorly thought out for sure.

But we are collectively way too hard on DD to suggest he's useless and unwanted. He is durable and he has two desirable skills --he can create shots for himself and others and he can draw fouls.

He shouldn't be any team's primary offensive engine(never should have been), but as a guy who can run your 2nd unit and hold his own when you need him to start and play a bigger role? That guy is still useful and there are teams who can make that work budget wise.

I would absolutely take him in Dallas. Not my first choice, but he's not this horrible player. This board is so guilty of taking guys slightly past their prime and calling them utterly useless.

You might be the only poster that has acknowledged anything positive about DDR. He’s flawed for sure, but it’s ridiculous. You would think he should be playing overseas or in the g league reading the posts here.

Do you think DDR is a sought after player?

Do you think Indiana would consider trading Nembhard for DDR?

I think he’s respected by players and front offices. This man has averaged over 20ppg for over a decade and has shown no signs of decline coming off a 22/4/4 year. He just passed the 25k mark in points and is one of the best scorers in history. He’s a bucket and yet fans talk about him as he’s trash. I’m not saying he’s a perfect player, he’s a bad defender for sure but the disrespect is similar to the narratives on Westbrook. Both are great players and all I have seen regarding both of them are their flaws, never their strengths.

Let's start with the 2nd, no.

Sought after? I don't totally know how to answer that. Do I think there is a team that will make a pursuit of him their top priority this off-season? No, probably not.

Do I think he is a player multiple teams are keeping tabs on if they can't land their primary target? Sure. Or at least I think they should be. Shot creation is still valuable. Especially if you aren't asking him to be your offensive anchor and nobody is asking that of him anymore.

But if a guy like Kyle Kuzma can have been seen just a few months ago as a potential answer by a win now team, I don't believe teams around the league think DeRozan is useless.

Without turning this into a Kuzma vs DDR comparison, most teams who believe they are just a player away probably aren't in need of shot creation without off-ball spacing and mediocre defense.

At least with Kuzma you can squint, watch a 2020 Lakers game and see how he fits the archetype of a turtiary shot creator but also a 6' 9" wing who can switch and defend.

Yeah there's definitely a tendency towards hyperbolic "superstar or scrub" analysis for guys who are past their rookie deals (not calling out anyone in this thread or anyone in particular, just noting).

There's plenty of teams that could find a useful role for DDR. What that role is exactly and what they would give up for him at his current salary is a different question.

No I agree, true contenders are less in need of creation. But then there are teams who are pretty solid play-in to playoff teams who would like to maybe win a round. Teams like Orlando, Dallas, Detroit, Clippers, San Antonio who could all use another guy who can create a bit.
