Jazz bottom out completely next season, collecting another high draft pick and banking on Tatum's complete return from the Achilles tear.

Even if Tatum only comes back to like 80% of his previous form I imagine you'd rather have him than whatever this return is.

and as godaddy said, you don't do that to your franchise player, especially one who seems like he'll be a Celtics lifer through his prime

Just because some, even most, options are rejected, that doesn't mean that they haven't been duly considered. Do you disagree that there's a massive valuation gulf when it comes to Lauri? That's bound to end in an impasse the vast majority of the time.

Interesting proposal. Very fresh take.

Boston went from possibly back-to-back champs to a very, very expensive mediocre team on a single play. We will now see how overpaid Brown is. It will be an interesting summer for the Celts.

If BOS ever were to consider this, you'd have to send back that 2026 Utah first that you're "bottoming out" for here.

That completely defeats the purpose for the Jazz, but I can understand the sentiment from the Celtics perspective.

Don't think you can send protected picks in a package like this for Tatum.

Boston certainly doesn't trade a 100% healthy JT, but I went with these two lightly protected FRPS given that there is always a measure of risk with an Achilles recovery. For argument's sake, if one of these was that years unprotected UTA pick?

Setting aside the ethics of trading a star, I think this is missing a third team, where UTA’s assets bring back a lesser star to BOS.

Let’s just focus on a Tatum trade. Next season, BOS is holding onto a roster of win-now players, and with a healthy Tatum, might have been the favorite. But Tatum is not healthy, and it will take a full year before he is. This costs the Celtics a year of their window as their vet roster ages one season, unless they can get a lesser player, and maybe get another ring.

And for that matter, Tatum’s “$54 mil payroll providing zero production” contract doesn’t hurt them as badly as it does BOS. They don’t have any goals about playoff success, and they are well under the lux.

Now, BOS and many teams may just ride out their star’s lost season out of loyalty. But in a truly economic sense, Tatum is less damaging to UTA than he is to BOS. This could be the basis for a trade.
