Bulls/Blazers/Nuggets

Post#1 » by Astaluego » Thu May 15, 2025 9:43 am

BULLS
In:MPJ/Saric
Out:PWilliams/Ayo/J.Smith

The Bulls get the best player in the trade, which should be a perfect fit... The next move would be to move up in the draft with the Blazers' future pick to land Maluach, if possible.

BLAZERS
In: PWilliams/Nnaji
Out:J.Grant

They save a few million, split Grant's contract into two smaller ones, and also get younger players who better align with their timeline.

NUGGETS
In:J.Grant/Ayo/Smith
Out:MPJ/Saric/Nnaji

Denver in win-now mode, greatly improving its depth, adding defense and athleticism in the backcourt and frontcourt

Yes the Bulls get the best player, and man they pay for it for for two years. They still have an expiring Vucevic who puts up the same numbers for half the price. Plus he's now backed up by an expiring Zach Collins so unless Maluach falls to #12 which many say No, after next season the Bulls have an expiring MPJ and ZERO centers on the roster. How many shots does MPJ, trying to justify being the highest player on the Bulls and wanting to be THE MAN with the ring, take away from Buzelis? Saric is likely to pick up that $5M option hoping to get bought out on his way to Europe to end his career.

With their guard glut the Bulls can move Ayp and get good assets in return. They have no need to move Smith, solid bench center, athletic, stretch guy, low cost not disgruntled. do the Blazers see Patrick Williams as a mix with their veterans or their youth? Everybody here just sees an overpaid bust.

This only becomes mildly acceptable if somebody takes Jevon Carter from CHI and the restriction on that PORT pick the Bulls hold gets down to top 7 so the Blazers pay price for moving on from Grant and the Bulls get something for taking on the biggest contract in the deal

Decent trade.
I think it would be better for MPJ to head to Portland

A simple trade like this would work
Grant + Reath <=> MPJ

So the Blazers get the better player on the better contract and give up no incentive? I could see why you think this is better for Portland but why is this better for Denver?

What exactly is the incentives for Denver here?

Porter has a deal that expires a year before Grant. I would trade Grant for him even if Porter was a 5ppg guy.

That being said - the idea that Grant is more of a role player than MPJ is shaky. They had similar usage rates last season (20 for MPJ, 19 for JG) and prior to that Grant since coming to PDX has posted far higher usage than MPJ - nearly 23 and then nearly 26. MPJ has never had a usage higher than 22.

Grant decided he didnt want to be a role player when he took the bag on a terrible DET team. He will be a baby next year when he is relegated to the bench behind Tou and Deni. Shaving a year off his deal in basically any way possible - up to and including taking a legit bad player in Kuzma - is a move I would get behind. Swapping MPJ for JG would be a huge win for PDX on the court and in the ledger.

I would move Grant + Simons + Reath for MPJ + Zeke + fillers - and that might actually be something DEN would be interested in as they return 2 rotation caliber guys for 1 + Simons as a shot creator when Joker isnt on the court would be useful.

G - Jamal Murray / Russ Westbrook / Jalen Pickett
G - Christian Braun / Anfernee Simons / Julian Strawther
F - Jerami Grant / Christian Braun
F - Aaron Gordon / Payton Watson / Jerami Grant / Hunter Tyson
C - Nikola Jokic / Daron Holmes / Duop Reath

G - Scoot Henderson / Kasparas (#11)
G - Shadeon Sharpe / Matisse Thybulle
F - Michael Porter JR / Toumani Camara / Rayan Rupert
F - Deni Avdija / Toumani Camara / Kris Murray
C - DeAndre Ayton / Donovan Clingan / Zeke Nnaji
IR - RWIII

I had hoped that one day Grant would recoup enough value to be moved for something we might want.

Now I see I was looking at him through Rose City-tinted glasses.

I don't see a whole lot of additional value from the OP trade offer for Denver.

Out:MPJ/Saric/Nnaji

Ayo, Smith, Saric, and Nnaji are all fairly inconsequential players IMO. Was just trying to simplify the trade...

Any chance of that died once his extension was signed.
Despite the hate, he's still a good player capable of starting on a championship caliber team. He's just so overpaid that he's hard to justify.

Ugh. Why would Denver do this? Already a bad shooting team, and trade away MPJ for another max contract guy, but a worse shooter and overall player in every way?

This is the most logical Nuggets related trade idea I've seen in a while, and probably the best case scenario for the Nuggets moving forward. They aren't going to get a great player for anything they have to trade. It will be highly paid glorified role players, that they can hope provide enough. Simons + Grant for MPJ would be about as good as it gets. Two rotation guys for one.

This is a no from me for Portland. Grant is a much better player than both of the guys we are bringing in. We are only saving about $6-7M per year for those big downgrades, and then still have an extra year of Patrick at $18M. Overall, this is Portland saving $7M total, but getting off of the contracts later, for worse players. Blazers shouldn't consider this.

Way too good for Denver.

They trade an inconsistent guy on a massive contract for 3 very good role players. Grant does 80% of what MPJ can do on offense and Ayo & Smith would fit like an absolute glove in their rotation. Denver lack 6-8 guys and they are about as good as you can get.
