Wiz/Orlando: Orlando gets 6 and the Wiz pick up a lottery ticket

Post#1 » by mhd » Thu May 15, 2025 9:25 pm

Straight up:

Wiz trade 6+2026 (worst amongst OKC/Hou/LAC) for 25+Orlando's swap position in the complicated Washington/Phoenix/Orlando/Memphis/Charlotte 2026 1st rounder).

Basically, the Wiz currently (assuming their 2026 1st doesn't fall below 8) have swap rights with Phoenix for the 2026 1st rounder. Then, Orlando gets to swap its 2026 1st rounder with the lesser of Washington/Phoenix (assuming Washington conveys). Then, Memphis gets to swap its pick for the least favorable amongst those three picks. Then, Charlotte gets the least favorable amongst Washington (assuming it is within the top 8), Phoenix, Orlando, and Memphis. Hypothetically, say the Suns win the lotto and get the 1st pick, the Wiz get the 4th pick, Orlando picks 18, and Memphis picks 24, then the final draft order would be: Wiz (1), Orlando (4), Memphis (18), and Charlotte (24).

With this trade, the Wiz in essence trade the least of OKC/Hou/LAC 2026 1st for Orlando's 2026 1st. Say OKC finishes 30 for example. Then, the final order would be Wiz (1), Wiz (4), Memphis (18), Charlotte (24), and Orlando (30).

Why for the Wiz?
1). They like no one at 6 assuming Flagg, Harper, Ace, VJ, and Tre all go 1-5 in some order. They punt on this year's draft, tank harder next year (something they were going to do anyways considering their pick is top 8 protected and if not conveyed, becomes a 2026 2nd rounder and 2027 2nd rounder) and hope Phoenix is just as bad as they are.

Why for Orlando?
1). It's no guarantee Phoenix will finish top 5 worst with Utah, Wiz, Charlotte, NO, Sac, and the Nets are in the tanking race. They do the deal to draft potentially Friers, Kon, or Maulach at 6 (who would all fill huge holes).

Orlando could easily be looking at a top-10 pick in a crucial year of their rebuild and if Phoenix implodes and Washington has another down development season this pick could hypothetically be top-5 in absolute best case.

Not sure there’s anyone at #6 that would justify Orlando moving this pick prematurely.

I agree in the sense that Orlando should shop this pick as early as possible to net them a difference maker, but not sure this is the trade.

WTF...the OP is even more confusing than the details of the pick swap...is there a trade hidden in there? I'd like to think I'm pretty smart, but please re-do in crayon for me.

I'd do it...I think Maluach is THE answer for ORL at C...then we use other assets for the Lead Guard of our dreams.

bogus comp…Javale McGee? Is this a contest to come up with obscure NBA references? I was thinking Olden Polynice :noway:

Maluach’s leg is bigger than McGee

McGee was actually pretty skilled, Maluach is raw granite w/ defensive instincts & mobility
