BOS/MIN: Jrue for Randle

Post#1 » by kds92 » Thu May 29, 2025 1:24 am

What compensation is needed to make this fair value?

BOS In: Randle (opts in)
BOS Out: Jrue

MIN In: Jrue
MIN Out: Randle (probably needs to send a filler to a 3rd team to avoid being hard-capped at the 1st apron)

Celtics get off long-term money and remain somewhat competitive next year.

Wolves are close and Jrue could put them over the top. They can probably still sign Naz and remain under the 2nd apron as long as they let NAW walk.

I certainly understand why both teams may hate this: Celts want more salary relief this year and the Wolves don't need another old guard.

The Celtics don’t get much relief this year but do the following seasons assuming they let Randle walk.
In a vacuum Randle has a fair bit more value than Jrue. At least one FRP I think.
The challenge here is the Celtics can’t keep him past next year so why? If the wolves really want Jrue then maybe Randle to a third team and a couple smaller contract players to Boston.
What about Randle to the Clippers and Jones and Bogdan to Boston? Clippers seem they want to make another try next year with their vets.

The fit seems awkward for Minny. They've got some financial issues already and adding Holiday makes things worse - and of course they'd absolutely need to resign Reid after this (and somehow add a playable 3rd big).

Minny would need to dump Conley here to a 3rd team too to clear some money to resign guys. Randle likely has some value somewhere but still really hard to find the team that is going to step up and pay it. Maybe the Suns as part of KD trade?

Note: I'm fairly certain this would have to happen before the new league year, with Randle opting into his last year.

I think Jrue would be a good "next vet" for Ant. Also worth noting, Jrue is another guy who is connected to Finch from their time in New Orleans. All of Minnesota's big moves under Connelly have been for player(s) with a prior connection to the front office or coaching staff.

Jrue would be ok, but I dont think he's much of a PG anymore and that's what the Wolves desperately need. Someone who can get everyone easy looks, unlock Gobert on offense, and take some of the pressure off of Ant.

I agree with you, but I don’t see a path to this player. So I’d rather double down on defense with Jrue and continue to develop everyone (Ant, Jaden, Naz, Dilly, Clark, TSJ, Minott, Miller, draft picks ) in a defense first environment.

There’s probably some merit in having a one year Randle rental to use as a Tatum place holder in the offense. Would theoretically make adjusting back to having a star forward have a big role much easier.
Rest in peace Mamba. There'll never be another Kobe.

Zero chance the Wolves would do this. Jrue Holiday saw a significant decline this year (missed 20 games, significant drop in three point percentage, no longer a top-tier defender) and is owed $37+ million in 2028. Holiday will be 38 when that deal expires. The last thing the Wolves want to do now is make a deal that will put that much money on the books during Ant's prime for a player who is, at best, a big question mark moving forward.

I would argue they'd be better off letting Julius pick up his player option (which this deal assumes he will) and walk if they can't get him back on favorable terms after next season.

While I think the fit for Jrue is nice in MN as others have pointed out the contract is prohibitive and probably a non-starter.

He might not be a "PG", but he represents high IQ, which is a significant need. He would be just fine starting next to Ant.

The combination of Jrue's age, declining play, and contract length make this a bad idea for Minnesota.

I don't understand. Why would Minnesota try and unload Randle? He was their second most important player in the playoffs and the main reason Minnesota beat the Lakers.

Celtics wouldn't want Randle. I do agree Jrue would be a great fit for Minny. A third team would need to be involved to find a home for Randle.

A big reason the noise is so loud about it is that it looks like it's a choice between Randle and Reid. Reid is a fan favorite to the Nth degree, and a borderline cult hero in the market. Many people are willing to sacrifice Randle if it means keeping Reid.

Jrue would be a great fit in Minny like he’d be a great fit anywhere. He’s still a great player and probably the r most easy to fit in player of his caliber or better. But new CBA makes adding any big salary player via trade a whole **** ordeal and there’s definitely long term risk on that deal with his age. I just don’t think MIN adding him makes sense when you take the cap sheet into account.

Not sure if the Spurs want Randle, but maybe.
