Spurs least sexy option

Spurs decide not to go all in before seeing Wemby healthy regarding its blood clots, but try to find better fitting players to assemble its team.
Memphis try to retool a bit making sure its cap figure doesnt blow in their faces

Spurs trade
Devin Vassel
Malaki Branham(re-routed to any team for a second rounder)
14# pick

Memphis trade
Desmond Bane

Spurs add a reliable bucket getter for Vassel(whose contract is 27, 27, 24 and 27) who is worse but not bad, but much cheaper using their extra pick this year.

Memphis save some money downgrading but adds a pick and allows the team to renegociate JJJ contract for the upcoming season bumping Jackson Jr.’s salary from $23.4 million to about $30.3 million. From there, Memphis could extend Jackson Jr. off his new salary amount of $30.3 million. That would allow the Grizzlies to offer Jackson Jr. up to $42.4 million in first-year salary in an extension starting with the 2026-27 season, trying to prevent him from hitting UFA. Renouncing Kennard and Bagley also allows the team to keep Aldama and still use the MLE to improve the roster.

Spurs depth(in case they draft Harper)
Fox/Harper
Castle/Bane
Bane/Keldon/Champagnie
Sochan/Barnes
Wemby/FA

Memphis
Ja Morant/Scotty Pippen Jr.
Vassel/FA(Bruce Brown?)/ Pippen
Wells/Carter Bryant(14#)
JJJ/Aldama
Edey/Huff

How much value is Memphis owed here?

Is MEM trading Bane for someone else that prefers a picks package over Bane? If not, I just don't see Bane as available.

This is a massive underpay for Bane. A late lottery pick and neutral salary for a Top 75 player locked in to a below-max deal is going to be topped by most teams.

I have Bane unquestionably more valuable than Fox given the respective circumstances surrounding Fox last year. Start there and add a 1st.

Once there, find a 3rd team because Memphis has depth but they need more star power or high-end starters.

I think Memphis is owed 2 more real firsts here.

Bane is twice the player, at least, than Vassell. A middling pick that's unlikely to be a long term starter is not worth the trade off.

This isn't all in by any stretch, and Bane is worth a lot more than thsi

Seems like you are undervaluing Bane a bit OP. While I don't think SA needs to trade for another guard and should use that 14th pick to draft a backup C or use it in a trade for other pieces that fit, I don't think I'd pass up the deal as outlined. Bane is better than Vassell

I agree that this package undervalues Bane. Also, SAS would probably be more interested in an S&T for Aladama...

proposal:

Vassell, #38, 2 future SRP
for
Aldama (S&T)

I think the Spurs have better uses for their resources than trading for another guard.

Bingo. Fox has higher usage on lower efficiency and is an expiring contract.

Memphis isn't doing this.

In an apron era, Spurs can find better uses of Bane's salary slot and the assets it'd take to acquire him.

You do realize your comparing apples to oranges, right?

Which Spurs player did I "wildly overrate" in the post you replied to? Just curious.

Not anywhere close to fair value for Desmond Bane. Devin Vassell does not have the same appeal that he used to have and while the 14th pick is a decent asset, it's not enough to bridge the gap in value between Bane and Vassell. The Spurs ether need to add more in order make this closer to fair value or the Grizzlies should look elsewhere to a different team who actually can and are willing to pay up to get Bane.
