Hornets/Raptors/Blazers: Masai swings for Ball, Hornets get two lotto picks

Post#1 » by mhd » Sun Jun 1, 2025 10:28 pm

Simple trade:

Portland trades Grant+11 for Quickley
Raptors trade Quickley+9 for Ball
Hornets trade Ball for Grant+9+11

Why for the Raptors?
1). Reports are the Masai wants to swing big. Ball is a swing for the fences type trade. He gives the Raptors a lead guard signed longterm who can create his own shot. With the East wide open, Masai goes for it.

Why for the Blazers?
1). Getting a productive PG in Quickley who can compliment their rotation while dumping Grant is a huge win.

Why for the Hornets?
1). Their new ownership and FO has shown patience in rebuilding. They didn't draft Ball. Getting two more lotto picks while taking on the admittedly bad contract in Grant allows them to continue to tank for next year's draft while adding more productive rookies with the 9th and 11th picks.

Have to believe the Hornets value Lamelo more than that. Raptors say yes easily

Blazers are not going to pay to dump Grants contract... so this is an immediate no.

I wouldn't be against an IQ/Grant swap, but would not pay for that privilege.

This feels more like Quickley + 9 + something from the Raptors, or Scoot + 11 + something from the Blazers. To be fair, I don't love Lamelo so it's difficult for me to imagine teams giving a lot of value for him, but I suppose if one of those teams were so inclined, then that would the starting point.

I don't see how the Ratpors could get Ball for that little (and I don't even like Ball). Quickley is being overvalued as an asset by quire alot here. I don't think he'd get #11 by himself, never mind just throwing in another player who is better than him.

If Toronto swings and misses for Giannis Antetokounmpo this offseason this is a easy yes from me. Lamelo Ball is a seemless fit with Barnes, RJ and Ingram. Gives Toronto a legit 3 point shooter and takes pressure off Barnes being the primary playmaker. RJ goes back to what he probably is best used as a 4th option who can be a spark plug type of scorer or a 6th man if your inserting Ochai into the starting lineup. Also with Ball you don't need him to be anything more than he is with the team having three very good defensive players (Barnes, Poeltl, Ochai)

That's an easy no from Portland. Not paying Quickley 32 a year to also block Scoot's development.

This. Blazers need to swing for the fences at 11. Meanwhile, Grant is overpaid, but actually a really nice backup forward. Blazers don’t use 11 to dump his contract and add guard depth just to simultaneously lose forward depth.

I'd probably hate it less if you sent Quickley somewhere that conceivably needed a PG and would be willing to send some value for him, and also found a way to get Charlotte some less terrible contracts than Grant. Orlando? Quickley for KCP + Goga + 16 feels less terrible, but still an overpay.

The fundamental issue is that Quickley and #9 is not enough value for LaMelo so someone somewhere along the line has to get screwed to make it work.

Unfortunately, I have to agree that this is an instant no for Portland. Just cut the Blazers out and figure out a fair price to bring LaMelo to Toronto.
