Walker Kessler + future 1st for 13

UTA trades: Walker Kessler (into AJ Griffin TPE), 2027 CLE/MIN/LAL/UTA 1st (lowest not conveyed to Phoenix, PHX receives lowest of UTA/CLE/MIN)
ATL trades: 13

Why Utah does it: Kessler is about to get extended. I like him, I think most Jazz fans do, but what is he going to get paid? Will it be similar to comparable centers in the $15-20 million range, or will we have a contentious extension negotiation? Here we get a second lottery pick as part of our reset of this failed attempt at two timelines. FWIW I probably keep Kessler, but I thought this was perhaps the most interesting realistic trade option available?

Why Atlanta does it: from the outside, it seems like Atlanta's biggest need is a rim-running center who is an elite paint protector and a lob threat. This allows Atlanta to put a really fun defensive unit around Trae. They still have the 22nd pick, and since they are losing their own 2027 1st this gives them something in its place. Trae-Daniels-Risacher-Johnson-Kessler with Okongwu as their 6th man.

I'd do this for 14 for the Spurs, even if we don't need a center of Kessler stature. It's good value.

I generally agree with the value here, but am surprised to see this offer from a Jazz fan. Based on some valuations on this board, I'd have thought Kessler alone would be worth a top 10 or even top 5 pick in this draft

I think you'd be opening yourself up to chemistry problems if you aren't starting Kessler.

I don't think any Jazz fan on this board has suggested he is worth a top 5 pick in this draft (but I think he would have been in the 2024 draft). I could see an argument that he is worth a late lottery pick (i.e., take out the 2027 1st).

Limit yourself to doing the trade you offered, I'll deal with internal problems later
PS: It's a joke, but since they go over the head of so many here, there goes this heads-up

To make sure I understand the pick protection here:
We are dealing with the '27 picks (2years from now). If the season ended with picks in this order (#10-Utah, #18-Lakers, #22- Wolves, & #25-Cavs) -> then #10 goes to Phoenix & #18 goes to Atlanta... correct?

Depending on how the draft shakes out, I might consider this for Portland at 11 (understanding that a followup trade or 2 would be required).

I think Walker is probably worth 13 alone. I don’t mind the direction just feel like it’s a mild overpay.

Kessler is worth a lot more than this. This is not a consensus belief by Jazz fans, I would need multiple 1sts or 4-8 lottery pick to even consider this.

In your scenario, PHX gets 25 and ATL gets 22. The "lowest" means the worst of the picks.

I think he's worth a top 5 pick. His defense is so elite and his scoring by the basket forces the opposing center to actually guard him. His age also makes him valuable he can help a team for a decade.

Glad I asked... that eliminates Portland from consideration here.

Typically "lowest" is lowest number (best pick). Because there's some ambiguity in that-> it's helpful to use best/worst as the descriptors

I have to be honest, I think that is a massive overvaluation. Lauri probably can't return that and he is waaaaay better ...

A bit of a mistype. Phoenix would get 25 and Atlanta would get 22 in that scenario. The LAL pick isn't included on the trade we did with Phoenix so there is a possibility that it could be the lowest of the bunch and that would convey to Atlanta in this case.

It could be a mild overpay, but he is also about to get a raise so ymmv.

I could see that package fetching as high as #9 in a scenario where the Raptors finally realize they probably need to be a younger team and sell off Poeltl in hopes of finding a younger C (Like Kessler). Houston should think about it at #10 too

A lot of Lauri's value is offset by his massive contract though, plus he's 4 years older than Kessler. I think it'd come down to what type of contract extension Kessler is looking for, if it's 20 million per year then you can have 14 and you can keep the extra pick, if it's 30 then I wouldn't give you a second rounder.

As a Hawks fan, I could get behind this.

I don't think so much is offset that he is worth the same or less than Kessler.
