BOS/SAS - Spurs go ALL IN

Spurs have a couple of years with Wemby and Castle on rookie years and SAS decides to go all in and open the championship window.
Boston decides to breakup the Jays and take a down year in exhange for draft pieces, younger players to reset their finances and prep for Tatum's 2nd half of his career. This deal presupposes a Jrue deal that reduces salary first so that Celtics will be under the 2nd apron as a result of this trade below, Jrue Holiday for Demar Derozan for instance.

SPURS trade:
#2 pick, #14 pick
2027 ATL 1st, 2028 Bos swap rights return
2026 UTAH 2nd, 2028 NOP 2nd
Devin Vassell
Keldon Johnson
Harrison Barnes
Blake Wesley

CELTICS trade:
#28 pick
Jaylen Brown
Derrick White
Xavier Tillman

If Jaylen was 25 years old I'd do this as the Spurs. As it is, there isn't enough of a young star in the package to move the #2.

Celtics can’t aggregate salary over the second apron. Trade is illegal

No, trade presupposes a Jrue Holiday trade, such that as a result of this trade listed, that the Celtics end up under the 2nd apron. it's a pretty easy fix, actually. You can tweak it on fanspo as a 3way trade with Jrue Holiday going elsewhere, I mentioned Sac as a trade partner with DeMarr Derozan going to Boston, and the trade goes thru fine if you give it a tweak.

If you run it in fanspo, just the Kings with Holiday, JD Davison going to Sacramento and Derozan and Isaac Jones coming back to Boston. In the real world, Sacramento could just waive Isaac Jones and create enough space but if you want to see TRADE SUCCESS then just do it as 3-teamer on fanspo.

Spurs shouldn't make the Celtics problems their own.

I don't see them trading for injured Tatum which is really the Celtics only major problem. You could also say finances, but this clearly isn't a deal about finances because they could address that without trading their 2nd and 3rd best players.

I agree the Spurs shouldn't be trading for Brown, but if they could bring White back, I think they would strongly consider it.

They don't technically have to aggregate, though. Brown for Vassel and barnes, White for Johnson and Wesley works.

Jaylen Brown has been playing through a torn meniscus, knee cartilage issues that aren't addressed properly are usually a big problem later on. Not saying this is necessarily going to happen, he's not Embiid or anything remotely close, but he's the athletic type pushing 30, with a a bum knee and a massive, massive contract. On paper value is ok-to-good for a team that wants to go all in, myself I'd take the slower route.

I don’t think this gets you Brown and White. Vassell and Keldon have way bigger contracts than I thought. I like Vassell, but I don’t love him at $25M+ for 4 more years. Keldon I see as a borderline rotation guy on a deep contender, and he’s making $17M for the next 3 years.

You can say Jaylen is overpaid, but he’s no more overpaid than those 2 and is the reining ECF and finals MVP. Derrick White is one of the best 3rd options in the NBA on a bargain contract (and he’s typically been our 2nd best guy on a nightly basis during the playoffs).

I love the thought process for the Spurs to go for it before Wemby gets the supermax but with guys that will still be good 5 years from now. I don’t think there is any way the Celtics trade Brown and White without Castle and #2 as the starting point. I still don’t know if Stevens bites with that.

I wouldn’t touch it with a ten foot pole from Boston’s perspective.

White is the perfect guy to complement the current Spurs back court, maximizes their defensive capacity and rounds out the lack of back court shooting.

Then just throw in Jaylen Brown issue there though is who knows how much he will play this upcoming season.

The Celtics don't have any single player that is more valuable than the #2 pick.

Brown is what he is. A fringe All Star on a monstrous contract. I'd rather have four years of Harper on a rookie deal. You already traded for Fox. No reason to rush things like this.
