Fox was traded to the Spurs and all the Spurs gave up was 2 backups, a really far back backup, and if memory is correct 3 FRPs spread out over 5 years. Maybe it was 4 FRPs.

If the Spurs were to trade him off- Magic, Pelicans, etc. what do you think his value is in terms of players?

Less than what he was traded for previously. I'd look that up, post-it so it's visible for all of us, and work from there.

Is he extending, and if so, at what number?

It's a difficult situation because I wouldn't want to give him a max deal and he's unrestricted next summer with a ton of cap space available.

He was traded for two unprotected firsts, a moderately protected firsts and four seconds with about $18 Million in extra salary beyond expiring. I think folks are going to be surprised when stars start going for that kind of trade package again and not the one where a team gives up five to seven years of picks and swaps.

And in case it needs to be said, no I don't think trading Fox makes any sense, and I've yet to hear an argument for it that I don't think is half-baked and actually considers the Spurs' position.

I am actually not a fan of him because of his lack of shooting, but I don’t think his value has changed that much. He will likely have a negative value if he signs a big contract extension. Players who can’t shoot and are dependent on speed tend to age badly.

Yeah I’d say he is kind of borderline deserving of a 30% max. In his prime very good player…probably top50 guy.

Young player with some upside, filler and 2 picks seems close. His contract situation brings his value down.

I like him on the MAVS and the WOLVES... Washington/Gafford/Christie+Lakers 29 although I suppose other teams will be needed, who can give the SPURS something they like, they could use all 3, but aside from PJ, the other guys would be backups... the WOLVES need a guard and I think Fox complements Edwards very well, but would they sacrifice McDaniels? If the answer is NO (as I think) ..should it be Rudy?

I agree it's pretty unlikely that a deal materializes that makes sense. Spurs are fine rolling with the three guards - it's an enviable position to be in. But I do think that if the Spurs can get a big future pick package + a more natural vet bridge PG who can slide to a 3D role when the youngsters are ready (Jrue) - that may make sense and is worth at least exploring. I'm sure the Spurs want to open as long a window as possible, and those picks will help them extend it or push them over the top when they're ready to compete for the chip.

Spurs can get Jrue for nothing, so who is offering the big future pick package?

I agree the Heat are the obvious fit, but think they need to attach at least two unprotected future 1sts and probably a swap or two to get the Spurs to even look at it.

One first went to the Bulls for LaVine because the Kings wanted him. Spurs traded a lotto pick, 2 unprotected 1sts, and 4 2nds.

1. Bulls 2025 1st (#12)
2. Spurs 2027 unprotected
3. Wolves 2031 unprotected
4. Charlotte 2025 protected 1st that was going to turn into two 2nds (2026 and 2027, likely high ones)
6. Bulls 2025 2nd (#42)
7. Nuggets 2028 2nd (likely late)

There have been rumors of interest from the Timberwolves, but I don’t like the idea of trading a lot for a $37 mil expiring, for a guy that may not want to stay in Minnesota.

I wouldn't use that as the baseline, since he lowered his own value substantially to force a trade.

The Spurs aren't trading him in any event.

That deal is such trash for SA. As a Heat fan I love it because it’s so lopsided in our favor. Looking at this not as a Heat fan it’s an insulting offer.

Fox to Magic for Franz Wagner?

The notion that the Spurs would receive less than they paid for Fox is laughable. Much to the dismay of the non Spur RealGM community, Spurs don't need to trade Fox, they don't need to trade Castle, and they don't need to trade the second pick. Spurs are not under pressure by ownership or their own stars (Wemby, Fox, whomever), Brian Wright can set his pants on fire and run circles around the court and he'd still have his job, and so would "El Jefe".

You can't force someone to sell when they don't want to and don't have to, especially not for the ridiculous prices listed here. I fully expect Spurs to go into the season with all three of Fox, Castle, and Harper, and if that's not the case it's going to be because a massive, unexpected possibility came up they couldn't pass up on.

Saying the price shouldn't go down after time has come off his contract doesn't make sense. Unless one believes he is negative value, but obviously you don't since you claim they should get as much as they paid.

But that's not how it should work, less time of a good player should return less value. Just basic economics really.

The Spurs not trading him is totally separate from what he would return. Which again in theory should be less.
