Herb Jones and Elfred Payton for Max Christie, Hardy, OMax and a 1st

Post#1 » by Darren » Mon Jun 9, 2025 2:44 am

WHY FOR NOP? They get Christie and a first for Herb Jones with OMax as a sweetner. As Zion misses tons of game, OMax can play. Actually, OMax has shown considerable improvement last season. Christie has a stretch of great basketball and let fans feel like getting Kobe for Luka at some point. Hardy is a great shooter like JJ Reddick and could actually work for points with good first step. He just lacks confidence at times.

WHY FOR DAL? The Mavs has looked to trade for Herb Jones last season. Guarding speedy guards like Ja Morant is the glaring weakness to contend. With Kyrie missing game, Payton, who averages nearly 7 assists, can somewhat make play. Payton can't shoot very well, though.

Feels light for NOP.

OMax played when Dallas had absolutely no bigs. And he showed what he knew he was -- try hard guy with very limited skills. Nobody thought Christie was Kobe and he had more shaky games than good ones. Don't oversell Mavs players because they are Mavs.

Also not sure Dallas should be investing one of 2 firsts they can trade in Herb Jones when they have bigger needs.

I feel like OP is doing some real sell jobs on Christie and OMP. "A first" is also kind of generic and difficult to judge without more specifics.

That being said, I do think Herb Jones is a little overrated on here in terms of what teams would actually trade for him. BUT then to bring it back, it also matters what NOP would be willing to trade him for, and I agree with this board here that they'd value him pretty highly. One of those guys whose on court value probably exceeds trade value so it'd take an overwhelming offer from someone. And this offer isn't that.

A lot of teams will offer at least a 1st for Herb. Which one and what protections are you offering. I don't think the Mavs players included here are adding value, very likely substracting overall value.

Agree. Hardy with 6M for 3 more year, is medium to partially negative asset, Omax is clearly still raw, and not an asset even under rookie contract either. Hence, Max + future first, may be more appealing offer.

Don't get me wrong, I like Herb, but what exactly is the huge gap (perceived on the board) between him and a guy like Thybulle?

This is just adding another forward to Dallas, I don’t get it. Do the trade if you think Herb is worth more than the LAL first, of course. Then trade him or PJ? Or ideally AD I get it..

But it really solves nothing for Dallas as a standalone and feels short for NOP

Herb can actually defend multiple positions in man, zone, and passing lanes. Thybulle is a decent man defender that feasts in passing lanes but isn’t a sturdy defender in man, isn’t super effective in zone, and he’s a bit more limited positionally in what he can defend. Herb can anchor a defense. Thybulle gets a couple of steals to mask he’s not a great defender.

Offensively, Herb has shown some promise of being able to put the ball on the floor and slash, while Thybulle is much more a spot up shooter.
