Kings send: DeMar Derozan, Terence Davis
Celtics send: Jrue Holiday

(Optionally, team 3 takes Davis on for a 2nd or cash)

Why for Sacramento? They get a mentor for Carter as well as a better fit for the team. Jrue could transform their defense and make the offense less iso heavy.

Why for Boston? They save money and put a bandaid on the offense while Tatum recovers.

Celtics need to clear $24M to duck 2nd apron. They need to clear $44M to duck the tax altogether.

I think the only way they go through the trouble of dealing Jrue is to duck the tax altogether. To do that, they have to move Jrue/Porzingis/Hauser for a combined total of about $28m back.

DDR at $24.75M is probably too much to make the math math on that. If he’s on their books, they’re probably a tax team unless they attach crazy assets to clear Porzingis almost entirely. They can probably get below the 2nd apron pretty painlessly dealing Porzingis and Hauser. Unless a Jrue deal takes them below the tax, not worth it. They’d rather pay tax on Jrue who they love and is still really good than DDR.

So this needs a follow up to move DDR elsewhere or it won’t work.

According to Hoopshype DDRs 26/27 contract is only partially guaranteed (10m). If this is actually the case it’s a palpable deal as they can get under the tax in 26/27.
I personally think there will be better Jrue deals out there still.
It’s a pipe dream imo to think the Celtics will even to try to duck the Apron this year.

The Celtics aren't this doing this. Demar Derozen is not a winning player and a awful fit for the Celtics and while they clear salary, it's not nearly enough. As others said, Demar going to have to be rerouted to a 3rd team or it's simply isn't going to work.

I don't think this is the deal, but I don't think I agree with the idea that Boston only trades Jrue if they end up out of the tax altogether this off-season.

Same. The decline is basically the same reason - not enough savings or young guy BOS wants going forward coming back. But, there are plenty of trade Jrue scenarios where you end up under the 2nd apron, but still in some amount of tax. I think something in the first 2 brackets is feasible for the right set of players.

On point. With the Tatum injury, I think Boston accepts a soft punt of the 2025-2026 season, saves some tax money, then retools a bit for the following year.
