Why for Orlando: They want/need shooting and energy off the bench. Powell was in the top 4 of 6MOY voting in 23 and 24, and was a borderline all-star as a starter in 2025. Anthony’s minutes are being cut. Goga’s playing time dropped after the all-star break and in the playoffs too. So they get the best/most impactful player and still have the two first round picks at 16 and 30, and a second round pick in 2026.

Why for the Clippers: They need a backup big—Goga fits the bill. They move up four spots in the first round, get a high second round pick this year, and a second next year to replace what they send out. Anthony combines with Bogie as the bench guard duo and (try to) take up Powell's minutes and scoring.

Why for Brooklyn: They basically swap #36 for #46, a future second and money. Since they have four first round picks, dropping the second round pick’s value for a future pick and money makes good sense.

This is much better for Orlando than version 25,000 of Simons for #16. I like it all around.

Powell wouldn't be my first choice for the Magic, but at this price, even without getting the late 1st back, sure.

If we cut out BRK and just do the Magic/LAC version, I 150% do this if Clayton somehow drops to 30, I do this 100% as is, and I consider if I get more value from Goga somewhere else if the 30 is gone.

I understand a lot of people don't follow the day to day of the Orlando Magic, and that is totally cool, I mean if you aren't a fan why would you, but Goga's playing time went down mostly due to injury and some non-zero amount to not fitting great along side Paolo. He was great off the bench coming in for Paolo (and fits great next to Franz).

This is a type of trade Clippers do if they got signaled from Powell's agent the extension they want from 2026 summer is way too long for way too much.

I like Goga as a back-up for Zu. Getting an early second is also valuable. Not high on Cole Anthony but his 26-27 contract is a team option so I guess it's ok to try for maybe Reggie Jackson vibes.

Was just kicking around something very similar in the spotrac machine. Came in to see if I was in the right ballpark and here's the same trade virtually!

Clips needs both future picks and a backup big. Orlando needs a cost controlled starter guard who can be extended for an amount that doesn't put them in the 2nd apron.

Win win.

I like the value, on paper, for ORL, but 32yo Powell's looming UFA/payday comes at a bad time for ORL too...he put up uncharacteristically good numbers and I'm afraid ORL will be buying high (not the trade, but the payday coming) or, if he's not paid well enough, he jumps to LAL or Team X to ring-chase in a year.

Very good player, great season...but I'm equally scared of paying him and not paying him...and he's not the playmaking guard ORL really is lacking.

It may be a little light for the Clips. But I don’t think Powell on his own is worth Anthony and Goga (who, combined are salary neutral or even a slight plus), the first round pick, and a future second. Maybe so. Or maybe the Clips could hold onto #30 and, in the scenario set up, offer the #36 from Brooklyn. As a Clipper fan, I’d like that better. If Magic were on board, fine.

I get where you’re coming from. Powell *did* have kind of a career year last year. But, really, he’s correctly paid for the type of player/production he put up in the preceding four years: 17-3-2 on sterling efficiency, largely as a 6th man (which is how Orlando would/should use him), playing about 75-80% of his team’s games. He’ll be 33 when his current contract runs out, and we’re moving into a period where teams and players are (much) more likely to pay good but not star level player’s salary that matches their own court impact. I’m thinking Norm will get something like a 3 year/$75-85 million extension if he produces at his last year’s level; maybe on the low end of that down to about $70 million if he’s more like he was the previous four years. Either of those is actually about the same or lower in terms of percentage of the cap compared to what he’s getting now. With a three year extension or new deal, he’ll be 36 at the end of the year when his next contract runs out. It’s a pretty good bet.
