Boston/ San Antonio

Boston send: Jaylen Brown
San Antonio send: Harrison Barnes, Keldon Johnson, and Jeremy Sochan, 28 pickswap back, Atlanta First
The internet is saying Boston will trade Brown to the Spurs soon. I'm guessing it looks like the above.
Boston why.
Save $$$. Get an expiring Barnes plus two playable dudes. Johnson and Sochan can be roleplayers for their next contending team or be tradeable pieces.
San Antonio why.
Get a star player to pair with Wemby without having to spend its most valuable assets. Brown's contract isn't a big deal to them since Brown's contract expires just before Dylan Harper's extension kicks in.

I hope so. Or Vassell but I think the Spurs would rather send picks if they have to.

Yikes. Orlando just gave up 3 unprotected 1sts, a top 2 protected swap, and #16 plus a solid youngster on a cheap deal and KCP whose value took a hit this year for Bane, and the reigning ECF and finals MVP returns 3 undesirable contracts with no picks? Without #2 or Castle, it’s miles away.

All right let's add a pick and the 28 swap back. What now?

I certainly understand that any Brown return is going to look really underwhelming considering how that contract plays in today’s financial environment but I don’t think it’d be as extreme as literally giving him away like this.

You say the internet is saying Brown is going to the spurs. That is incredibly vague. Any particular credible source there??

Just some chatter on X, no one major.
Actually now Chris Mannix is reporting it. I guess it's happening.

Seems pretty far off.
Celtics likely get much more should they decide they want to trade him

Any offer from the Spurs that doesn’t include #2 would be lowkey insulting tbh. Overpaid or not, JB is a proven difference-maker and NBA champion.

Barnes, Vassell, 14 and a couple future picks seems more realistic if something were to happen. If Brown goes on the market I think there is a lot of interest.

Yeah, I think Jaylen Brown is usually overrated and overpaid, but he's still a very good player in his prime, this price tag is not realistic.
But hey, maybe the Celtics are trying to give the Lakers a run for their money on worst trade of the year!

Like you said it is just chatter. The spurs are maybe showing interest. There is nothing to indicate any kind of progress in a transaction. Just because Mannix is reporting it does not mean anything is happening.

If Celts were going to trade Jaylen Brown to the Spurs, which I'm not advocating. But if I just was to guess what the deal would be, I'd say:
Celtics trade Jaylen Brown, Sam Hauser, #28
Spurs trade Devin Vassell, Harrison Barnes, Malaki Branham, draft capital below
It'd be two seperate deals since Brown + Hauser can't be aggregated.
The picks from SA to Boston would be #2 in 2025, #14 in 2025, 2028 BOS swap given back, 3 best of 2nds for 2028, 2029, 2030

I feel the best comp for Brown is Siakam, a forward who can kinda shoot from the outside, can get you an ISO bucket though ideally not, had 2 All-NBA and 2 AS when traded to Brown's 1 All-NBA and 4 AS now. Siakam's All-NBA season being less distant in time to the putative trade.
Siakam was an expiring and Brown is locked up for 4 more years but I don't know if that helps or hurts Brown's value compared to Siakam's at the time.
Siakam went for 3 firsts and Bruce Brown who may have been a salary dump. I don't think a package of #2, #14, and Vassell is realistic, but #14 might be in play. The Spurs probably want to keep Vassell and send out more picks if they can, unless they want to play Fox/Castle/Harper as their backcourt.

This is just irredeemably bad for Boston. I mean unless you're really high on Vassell but even then it's just so bad to include Hauser and #28 going back to the Spurs as well.
It really is #2 or bust. The Spurs have enough picks to make a compelling package not including #2 or Castle, but if you're Stevens and you're making this monumental of a move you need some level of certainty on the quality you're getting back.
I don't mind Brown as a target for the Spurs. He's a legit #2 who can be the leader for that squad until Wemby is ready to ascend his rightful throne (so far he seems to have a similar low-key vibe to Tatum so might work well). But given the price point I hope Stevens has for Brown, I think KD is a much more fun option for them at what I assume is a far far lower price point. Pay a small price up front for immediate satisfaction pairing Wemby and KD, but retain most/all your blue chip pieces (Castle, #2, ATL picks etc.) so that you are still poised to continue developing into a OKC-esque Goliath.
