A new PG to Dallas, MIA gets familiar faces

Post#1 » by aguiar95 » Sun Jun 22, 2025 1:30 pm

DAL in: Rozier, #20
DAL out: Thompson, Martin, Powell, '30 PHI 2nd

Why? Get an expiring PG that could keep things going untill Kyrie gets back and a pick to draft a PG in Flagg's timeline (Flagg/Lively/Christie) to develop.

(Irving)/Rozier/#20 (Clayton Jr./Traore)
Flagg/Christie
Washington/Marshall
Davis/Prosper
Lively/Gafford

MIA in: Thompson, Martin, Powell, '30 PHI 2nd
MIA out: Rozier, #20

Why? Get better fitting pieces while losing a pick they probably wouldn't play right away. Maybe they could also get Durant for Wiggins/Robinson/Jaquez/picks and go with Herro/Thompson/Durant/Bam/Ware lineup, but I'm not going there.

Herro/Mitchell (Re-signed)
Thompson/Robinson
Wiggins/Martin
Adebayo/Highsmith
Ware/Love

Rozier is not a basketball player any more, he's just a contract, he's not keeping anything going except a tank.

Still don’t see why Miami does this. Rozier/Klay is a wash on value when you consider their contracts. Give me 20 and the expiring Rozier every time here.

This would be really interesting for Miami if they acquired Durant for the package in the OP. Without Durant this makes little sense for Miami given the length of Martin and Thompson's contracts and the fact that no one incoming for Miami really moves the needle for Miami.

This makes a lot of sense for Dallas from a financial standpoint. There are a lot of guards they could get in FA to replace Thompson's shooting. Martin seems to be the odd man out in Dallas. On an expiring, Rozier is a low-risk acquisition.

If Miami were to include #20, perhaps it would be more appropriate to get a lottery protected swap back from Dallas instead of the 2nd round pick since Miami is taking on a bad contract in Martin.

Because Klay and Martin can play? Why wouldn't they? Klay and Rozier and in no way a wash.

Thompson is MUCH more valuable to Miami IF Miami has Durant. Thompson isn't what he used to be, but he can still knock down 3s and get you 10-15 points in a quarter if he gets hot. His shooting could open up offensive options for other players without being ball-dominant. If Miami can squeeze out the player Martin was in Miami, he could be useful off the bench.

The biggest value for Dallas here is clearing their books and the #20. If Rozier actually fills in well for Irving, that's a plus.

Klay is better on court no doubt but there are teams that may prefer roziers expiring instead of klays 2 yr deal

I don’t like it much for either team. Mavs can do better in PG options. Sure they get a pick in a good draft, but IDK, seems the wrong direction.
MIA is better off just using the pick imo and letting Rozier expire and moving on. They traded a first to get him right so then needing a first to dump him is a big waste of draft capital.

Who cares about what other teams want? Both teams are looking to compete, having 27M of real production >>> 27M of dead cap...
Heat can decide if they want to pay the 1st for 2 players that aren't worth a 1st, but the Mavs will not trade actual depth for dead salary, it makes 0 sense for them.

Dallas package helps on the court more obviously.

But Miami packages expires.

Don’t think the difference is worth a first at all. If Dallas was tanking like they should, we would be so excited to convert rotation pieces into Terry’s expirings with no value added.

Now if Dallas needs to convert their players into expirings for a larger/different deal? Miami should do the deal without the picks - probably add a second or two.

Yeah, I don’t think this is a standalone type of trade with the pick going to Dallas. I don’t think Miami pays for that. But without the pick this could be a solid addition to a deal with a team that prefers expiring filler to multi year functional players. This is the type of thing I think you stash for an expansion to a separate Dallas deal with those players.

Might be a little light without the frp, but it's definitely too rich to include it, imo...the PHI srp means nothing in context
