ATL - MIA: Rozier + 20 for TPE

MIA trades: Terry Rozier, 20
ATL trades: fake 2nd
Why MIA does it: move off of Rozier, get a large TPE looking for a future piece.
Why ATL does it: there is reporting they want to use their 25 million TPE before the league year switches over. This gets them a good pick they can package with #22 to try and move up.

Not sure I like the direction for Atlanta. They would be better off trading for a decent player a team needs to cut ties with due to salary (Grayson Allen from Phoenix as an example). If that deal doesn't exist, this is a solid consolation price.
For Miami, they should be trying to compile their assets since they are asset deprived and lack depth, rather than using assets to cut costs.

i like this for the sole reason that Terry's 2024-25 salary barely squeezes into that $25M TPE by about $300k.
The real reservation I'd have here, is Terry's gambling investigation. We have no idea what's going on with that. If he's guilty of that, his contract is definitely getting voided and this trade is pointless.

this trade gives them a salary slot they wouldn't otherwise have, to do exactly what you're saying. If the Hawks aren't worried about the payroll going up by $28M for the possibility of a future trade (they still won't be in the tax, but may not be able to use the full MLE below it), they should absolutely do this.

Atlanta having the salary slot isn't necessarily a benefit.

Correct, Atl would be looking for a player of need and draft comp would be the sweetener. But the priority would be to get a top 8 rotation player out of the TPE in the current market.

That's not accurate, The $25 mil TPE expires July 7th.
I'm think if the Hawks use the TPE before the league year switches over, they'll be a luxury taxpayer. No starter.
I think the Hawks want to use the TPE for a player with real on court value to round out their bench and help them win games.

Doesn't make any sense for Miami to give up a pick for a guy on an expiring.
As much as Rozier gets trashed, the guy is still a legit basketball player who can help a team. He may not fit in Miami or be in Miami's rotation, but that doesn't mean he can't do so elsewhere.

I would 100% give up my Hawks fandom until he was gone if we traded for that sorry bum to the hawks i can't stand him as a person or a player.

How soon do you think they might charge, prosecute and possibly convict Rozier? That contract isn’t getting voided until then.

Does Miami need this room for anything? Just doesn’t feel like something you do unless you need to duck a certain payroll threshold.

Or get space for a bigger move

Yeah true. It’s just that MIA isn’t exactly so flush with assets that there’s going to be too many “bigger moves” I see them making where they can afford to use one of their picks to dump a contract first or as part of the deal. Feels like if there’s any “big move” to be made for Miami then Rozier will just be expiring filler and new team will take him as part of the package, along with the pick.

Not a fan of it for either team. I think the Hawks could probably find a better use for the TPE, and Miami would just be throwing away an asset unless this is a setup for a KD-type trade, who’s already been traded.
