Max Strus for Expiring? CLE/PORT

Post#1 » by bgrep14 » Mon Jun 30, 2025 1:44 am

Cleveland: Strus

Portland: Timelord

Cavs get big man depth or can stretch Timelord

Portland gets a SG. Only have Sharpe but Strus gives them a guard who can play off the ball.

I’ve lost track of Portland’s salary situation after taking on the Jrue trade, but on the surface I like this. BTW, I think Thybulle is Portland’s backup SG currently, with Jrue likely playing there at times with Scoot in the lineup, so I wouldn’t say Sharpe is our only SG, but I still like bringing in Strus.

Edit: i just looked into some things. Is Strus a bad defender? I thought his reputation was ok. I kind of want to avoid bringing in more bad defensive guards.

I like Strus. I don’t have any interest in seeing Cleveland make this deal.

I think this is an easy yes. I like it

Why would we trade for a player we'd have to stretch as a second apron team?

If Cleveland should have learned anything after failing in the postseason four years in a row, it’s that injuries matter.

So obviously, add Ball and Timelord to the roster and get more fragile?

The stretch provision allow the cavs to spread Timelords pay over 5 years so it’d be a 2.65 million per year against the cap. Rather than strus at 15m+ and get the Cavs within almost a Dean wade dump of getting under the second Apron. Pretty sure being a second apron team is exactly why they’d make a trade to stretch someone.

While you could debate whether or not Cleveland should start Hunter over Strus at the 3 next season, most contenders don't trade away a starter for virtually nothing.
Well at least we're not Detroit!

This poster is clearly willing to blow up the team in order to be able to trade for a 41 year old LBJ on a max deal. I would be shocked, not surprised, but shocked if the Cavs F.O. was.

If the Cavs were that concerned with getting under the second apron, they wouldn't have extended Merrill. They would've found a third team to take Ball (or stretched-waived him). They wouldn't have drafted a player at 49 who they had to give an NBA contract to. It dies not appear to be a priority this summer.

I'm not sure that this is the best offer that CLE could get for Strus, but if so? I do that in a second if I'm Portland.

Is there a reason CLE would have to stretch him?

I don't think the value is quite there straight up. Would be better off keeping Stus.

Or they’re planning to trade Garland for a player/picks and space…

To get under the second apron and be able to aggregate to make a trade and avoid future apron penalties.

Well, if they're trading Garland for space why are they trading Strus for Timelord.

Feel like ATL would take him into their TPE, if the goal is savings.

Contenders don't move starters for cap space, let alone multiple starters with little to no on court production in return. Maybe take a break with the Cavalier trade proposals?

The 2nd Apron has only been in effect since 2024-2025 so there’s not really much depth of data to make an ignorant comment. Prior to that Heat and GSW built dynasty’s dumping starters to sign stars or trade. Even the Cavs dumped half their team to get LeBron back. You may have watched KD and LeBron play a few times. Hell, Denver literally just traded Porter and a first just to cut salary are they not trying to compete with Jokic?

The only way to aggregate is to get under the second apron and I guarantee you if they run the same team back they don’t make it out of the east. They can go out of the Apron and go back in to restructure the team to avoid another 2nd round exit. Maybe take a break from being a douche, it’s only a trade board.

Who did the Heat trade to sign LeBron and Bosh? (47 win 1st round exit in 5 games the previous season, btw)

Who did the Warriors trade to sign Durant?

Who did the Cavs trade to sign LeBron? (33 win team who did not make the Playoffs the previous season, btw)

Denver? Didn't they just trade for the better, cheaper player? Pretty sure most would consider that a win-win transaction.
Well at least we're not Detroit!
