LAL trade: Kleber, cash
Charlotte trade: Jeffries, NSJ

Why for LAL: get some breathing room under the apron for buyout candidates as season go along
Why for Charlotte: clear up some roster space and add a big

Why would the Hornets do this? You should at least add Knecht in the trade so that they walk away with some form of an asset. But I doubt the Hornets are in a hurry to work with the Lakers.

If you were given an opportunity to do a solid (this trade) for a person (Lakers) that outwardly crapped on you in a previous deal would you do business with them ?

NSJ and Jeffries are buried on the depth chart in Charlotte. Kleber would actually play minutes for them given their weak front court. Cash makes up most of the difference in salary.

our frontcourt depth is rough. it's not "Kleber would get playing time" rough. we'd need an asset here.

Maybe Lakers & Jazz could do something like this

2nd, cash, Maxi or Gabe for Love & Svi or Springer

Just for Love would be even better if Utah doesn't need to clear any roster spots

Lakers get below the cap enough to sign a 15th player

Knecht for SVI

Makes our roster crunch worse because we can cut NSJ & Jeffries at low cost. The roster is already packed with players who shouldn't be traded, and others who can't be moved without attaching draft capital, and still others where it will be a long time before they're eligible to be included in trades.

We can't just eat Josh Green. We already have to eat Connaughton plus the 2 mentioned here (Jeffries and NSJ) to get down to 15. We'd have Kleber as 16 then WTF do we do with Josh Green? Eat 27 million? Not small market Charlotte.

Josh Green for Kleber expiring works though. And no, no draft picks attached.

Knecht for SVI

Why in the world would we do that

Or the original trade

Rather just have Knecht at this point

Im only moving him if were getting a legit rotation 8-9 man playoff guy

Josh Green for Gabe Vincent and Maxi Kleber.
Lakers get a breathing room under the apron and 3&D guard, Hornets dump Green's extra year.

Hornets have to do 2-for-1 right now. Can't do the reverse.

Why? Can't they just waive Jeffries? He's unguaranteed according to Spotrac.

That's true, which is why it's pointless to trade him plus NSJ for a player requiring a roster spot.

Even if we cut NSJ (small buyout) and Jeffries (no penalty) we are at 16.

We have to move Green + Connaughton for 1 player to get to 15. Or, less ideal, move Green, buy out Connaughton.

We just lost Okogie for nothing because we were able to just waive him like Jeffries.

I don't think Okogie is such a big loss.
PatC fits into WAS TPE, he can be dumped there, how about this?

CHO Sends PatC, Josh Green, 2nd rd pick
CHO Receives Khris Middleton*

CHO get a scoring vet who can give 20 MPG, dump Josh Green extra year.

LAL Send Maxi Kleber + Gabe Vincent
LAL Receive Josh Green
Get a 3&D guard, open 2 roster spots and room under the 1st Apron to use them

WAS Sends Middleton
WAS Receive: Patc (into TPE), Gabe Vincent (into other TPE), Maxi Kleber (into MLE), 2nd 2d pick, 33M TPE
Generate 33M TPE, Waive PatC and Maxi, keep Gabe for the roster spot.

* Same deal works with CJ McCollum, but I think Middleton fits better in CHO

They got Liam McNeeley who is significantly more talented than Knecht along with a future first and Mark passed his physical with another team. Lakers are the only ones coming out of that whole deal looking silly

I like Middleton, and the deal works fine.

However, the matching salary does not return a center, and Charlotte needs one. So Middleton is a waste of matching money.

Conclusion?

A) Hornets need to move Green and/or Connaughton for one player who is a center.

B) If it's just Green, have to buy out Pat.

That gets the Hornets to 15 with a center.

Jeffries and NSJ don't have a roster spot in this scenario, so they can be bundled with Green for matching purposes or cut, but if traded in a stand alone deal for a player requiring a roster spot (in this case, Kleber), the roster crunch gets worse, then you have to move another player on the roster with Green, probably Grant Williams (but Hornets have plans to give him some minutes small ball center).

Grant is coming off an ACL tear, so together with Green, he'd weigh down value even further.

Easier way to look at it.

Need: one player (center)

Matching salaries:
Green (required to free one roster spot)
Grant (optional for matching, creates 1 extra roster spot for Connaughton)
Connaughton (optional or buy out)
NSJ (optional or buy out)
Jeffries (optional or cut)

You can see our GM is in a bad position.
