Doncic intends to sign a three-year, $165 million contract extension in person with the Lakers on Saturday, the first day the franchise was eligible to offer him one, sources told ESPN's Shams Charania. The third year will be a player option, sources said.

I think this is exactly what that earlier report predicted in terms of timing and contract details.

Great for LA. If the plan is free agency having Luka locked in to help recruit is nice.
Luka is a getting paid no matter what guy but rhus sets him up for a mega deal in 3 years so good for him too.
But huge for Lakers

The 2 years before option out gives him the fastest way to a 35% max.

Luka going for the 35% max to make up for the supermax he lost when Mavs traded him. I wonder how much he can make up of lost dollars.
Lakers are a great personality fit for Luka. He can show out on the court and live quietly.

Great for LA. And great for Luka. Especially if new ownership isn't as incompentent as the last one.

This was poor decision by Luka and Bill Duffy. Like what have the Lakers have shown that suggest that they would be capable of building anything of note around him? They have limited assets, cap space in the 2020s means nothing, have a poor Front Office and a cheap ownership. Safe to say he's no different than other players in his generation of choosing money, instead of caring about winning. Typical Gen Z NBA player.

Pretty sure the Lakers have won more championships than majority of the NBA franchises the last two decades...

And this is supposed to matter in 2025? The Lakers nowadays are poorly run with a Front Office that's often about as delusional as their fanbase and have not shown that they are capable of building a contending roster. How things look over the next couple of years, nothing will actually change. The Lakers roster will very likely be filled with players that nobody wants and limited assets to improve. It's just not a winning situation at the end of the day.

I mean, if you want to put your biases aside we can discuss this. The Lakers' roster is going to look vastly different in even a calendar year. I know it's going to be insane to consider, but the Lakers could be armed with 3 (yes three!!!) tradeable FRPs plus a substantial amount of expiring contracts ($22M+) or substantial cap space next offseason to make moves. Cap relief and 3 FRPs isn't anything to scoff at. They're a little short on prospects unless Dalton Knecht, Bronny James, and/or Adou Thiero take big steps forward.

Let’s not generalize and take shots at fan bases. You can make your points without the insults.

Makes sense for both sides. If he does eventually want out he just requests a trade, that's how things work today. And as far as LAL building a contender... sure, they haven't been the basketball front office but it's the Lakers so eventually someone will want to play there especially with Luka. I get why it's frustrating and annoying to other fan bases but end of the day the Lakers can fall ass backwards into great players. It is what it is. Luka shouldn't be overly concerns about whether he'll be able to compete there.

LAL has limited assets.
The rest of this…
