I assume this was in the can before the trade, but that is a LOT of money for a borderline All-Star level guy

It's not good at all, but this was probably agreed upon before Fox demanded a trade to San Antonio and got the trade price lower for the Spurs.

This is wild to me. I'm just not sure this is what's best for Victor, and shouldn't that be the goal for every move going forward?

It gives them a solid veteran all-star-ish lead guard for the next few years while Castle and Harper develop. Someone to win-now with Wemby, and then they can move him in two or three years if Castle and Harper are totally ready.
Imagine if they hadn't traded for Fox, and Wemby - already an all-nba player - was forced to languish with a rookie guard and a second year guard as his backcourt.

Yeah I mean this puts him top 10 in the league for AAV...and I'm not sure he's a top 40 player

SA will regret this.

Fox still one of my favorite players of all time.
But I think this is rough for SA. They felt the need after Fox helped force his way there. Twith Castle/Harper, I think they are going to regret paying Fox nearly 60/year sooner than later. I would have wanted to give him a 2 year extension.
5 years / 267 million total is a ton of money.

I think Castle will be traded. Fox/Harper is a really solid backcourt foundation.
Spurs need to trade Castle before the league catches on. He was ROY in the worst draft class in decades, cash in while you can.

In theory, it sounds good. But that is a lot of money, and Victor is only two seasons away from starting his rookie extension. Does Fox make enough of a difference to be taking that much of the Spurs cap sheet? Maybe he does, but I guess personally I'm not completely sold. I don't see them as a Top 6 team, and I'm not sure they're really even close to that point even if Victor is twice as good as Wilt Chamberlain.

Yeah, that's a lot of money for Fox. I'm not sure he's even a contender #3.

Ideally a 'fair' long-term contract is one where a player could plausibly overperform or underperform the contract. This feels like paying for the best case scenario of Foz going forward. He might be worth the deal but he's not going to overperform the deal and has a significant chance of underperforming it.

Yeah I’m going to pile on, it’s too much even if it’s already prearranged.
I also don’t love maxing him but staying away from vets at spots of need.

Like others have said, this was probably a foregone conclusion at the time of the trade, so no surprises here. As long as Fox picks up where he left off the season before last (the last time he was actually healthy), he'll provide the Spurs some good years before they need to worry about paying his replacements in Castle and Harper.

He's entering his prime, it was a no brainer at the time to trade for him, and the extension was agreed upon then.
Winning the lottery and getting Harper wasn't expected.

What reason was there not to do this?
The lottery? They need to see what they have in Harper before they make major franchise decisions based on him,. THey had a path to contention before the lottery.

Other teams would have paid Fox this, so it's his market rate. Nobody complained at the time of the trade. You can't expect the Spurs to double-cross him, especially not after he was the first guy ever to force his way to the Spurs.
