Cavs/Nets/Blazers/Hornets

Post#1 » by bgrep14 » Wed Sep 24, 2025 2:32 pm

Cavs: Wade, Strus, and a 2nd
Cavs: Murray

Cavs get under 2nd apron

Portland: Murray, Williams, and Rupert
Portland: Strus and Wade

Portland picks up some rotation pieces and stay under the luxury tax

Nets: TPE
Nets: Connaughton, Rupert, and 2 2nds

Nets get some value for taking on money

Hornets: Connaughton and a 2nd
Hornets: Timelord

Hornets get big man depth they need

I see no reason for the cavs to duck the Apron this year, in 2 years Hunter and Strus are off the books and Mitchell will opt out to look for 35% max, that's when you recalibrate...

I suspect the Cavs roster is pretty much locked for the season. I know Wade can stay on the floor in the playoffs due to defense and rebounding, less sure about Murray.

But of all the teams who might want Strus, the Blazers are least likely (behind maybe the Suns). Cronin inexplicably traded for Jrue and signed Dame to the full MLE sight unseen. They've got Scoot and Sharpe, who needs to get paid soon, behind them.

I don’t think Portland pays a 2nd to take on extra salary next year and thin the center position more.

It'd be nice if they ducked the 2nd apron so they could aggregate salaries in a trade to improve the team. Doesn't mean they can't go back into the 2nd apron if they feel they have or want too.

Pretty gross for Cleveland. Moving rotation players for a chance to maybe improve the roster? Strus, in particular, is a competitor, something they need more of, not less.
Well at least we're not Detroit!

Problem is we dont' have the roster spot unless we cut Plumlee or Dinwiddie. Both of those guys are better bets to contribute than RW3.

Robert Williams the 3rd has averaged 33 games per season over the last 7 seasons. That isn't worth a roster spot.

1 LaMelo
2 Brandon Miller
3 Miles Bridges
4 Kon K
5 Josh Green
6 Salaun
7 Sexton
8 Tre Mann
9 Grant Williams
10 Moussa Diabate
11 Kalkbrenner (rookie)
12 Sion James (rookie)
13 Liam McNealy (rookie)
14 Dimwiddie
15 Plumlee

Blazers aren’t “already in the championship mix” so adding vets for end of bench cheering makes no sense

If Tyson develops enough by the deadline to make Strus expendable, I could see him getting moved (not to the Blazers who just extended Sharpe and are loaded at the wing). I don't see a scenario where we trade both of SFs given Hunter's injury history.

Cutting salary to below the second apron would save the Cavs a ridiculous amount of money in luxury tax. Something like $130m. There's reasons to cut salary if there's doubts.

The Cavs decide at the deadline whether they've got a shot at the title or not. No need to decide sooner.

But if everybody's healthy then Strus and Wade are possibly the most expendable and it doesn't really matter what comes back.

Tyson is getting moved to the Nets in this trade to incentivize taking on a little bit of money. Wade is Hunters backup, Strus has never been a good SF option and more of a 2 guard which is why they acquired Hunter in the first place. If anything maybe Nets throw in a 2nd so Cavs get 2 2nds and TPE.

Who's the backup 4 if Wade is the full time backup 3? I don't think the Cavs are giving up Tyson. They've given him some of the most difficult defensive assignments over the first 4 games. Having a cheaper option off the bench to fill that role over the next three seasons will be valuable. It doesn't matter as the Blazers aren't taking on Strus unless Sharpe is outgoing and his PPP makes that very unlikely.

Honestly, Porter hasn't gotten enough run to know whether Strus is as expendable as some fans believe him to be. All of Ball, Nance, and Hunter have extensive injury histories.
