Suggs to Memphis, Henderson to ORL

Post#1 » by Bentley1225 » Thu Jul 23, 2026 3:15 am

Ill offer this idea for:
-Memphis to add a starting combo guard with excess guaranteed expiring contracts
-Orlando to significanly reduce tax bill by swapping Suggs for Henderson
-Portland clear up glut of PGs while getting a 1st for Scoot

To Memphis (Trade KCP, Pippen Jr, Lakers 1st)
-Jalen Suggs (4 years, $115.5 million)
-2027 Minnesota 2nd round pick via Portland
-2030 Orlando 2nd round pick

To Portland (Trade Henderson, 2nd)
-Kentavious Caldwell Pope (1 year, $21.6 million)
-2027 Lakers 1st round pick via Memphis

To Orlando (Trade Suggs, 2nd)
-Scoot Henderson (1 year, $13.6 million plus QO)
-Scottie Pippen Jr. (1 year, $2.4 million plus TO)

Memphis consolidates down its number of guaranteed contracts to land Suggs who can start as they get back 2nd round picks for giving up a 1st

Suggs/Clayton/Russell/Johnson
Jerome/Spencer/Coward
Grant/Wells/
Boozer/Hendricks/Prosper/Jackson
Edey/Stewart/Post

Portland clear up glut of viable startung guards by acquiring KCP along with the 2027 1st. This keep Portland just under tax apron

Morant/Lillard/Krejci
Holliday/KCP/Cissoko
Avdija/Sharpe
Camara/Potter
Clingan/Williams/Hansen/Carlson

Orlando create more pG depth and significantly lower their cap/luxury tax bill

Henderson/Carter/Pippen Jr.
Bane/Richardson
Wagner/Da Silva/Cain/Penda
Bancerho/Isaac/FA?
Carter Jr./Bitadze/Vucevic

Absolutely not. Portland isn't going to sell Scoot off this cheap.
(I also think this pushes Blazers into the tax which is a nonstarter)

I don't like it for Memphis. Committing a lot of money to a middling starting guard with an injury history just to consolidate talent is a big ask. At the moment, their books are relatively clean aside from Grant, and Suggs doesn't move the needle enough to warrant this type of deal.

Portland needs wings with size, not KCP.

Really, really good for Memphis. Are they getting 2 players who will be better and cheaper than Suggs in 2026-2027?

Suggs is not a real PG and Coward is our starting SG. He just doesn't make sense for Memphis. He would be an expensive luxury player, that we are not in the position to pay for right now.

Would just cut out Orlando and give Scoot a go from Memphis POV.

Easy yes from Memphis. Coward can play SF.

For Portland I would want one of two of Memphis' many PFs instead.

Would think Mem goes after Scoot here. Neither true PG’s but Scoot is closer. Take the upside shot.

I'd do Black to POR for Scoot, maybe ORL adds a srp...but this isn't enough for Suggs.

First question is whether Suggs is positive value on his contract. I don't think that's a slam dunk, in the post-apron environment, but the declining deal makes it much more attractive. He probably pretty good value as a solid starter by 27/28.

Next is whether this is a year too early for Memphis? In the old lotto environment, I'd be wanting to take our lumps for a year, play the young guys a bunch and figure out what we had before adding another fairly high pick. Now, I'm worried about avoiding relegation. Unless Coward or Boozer really pop, are there three teams clearly worse than the Griz? Maybe the nets, maybe the Kings, maybe Bucks or Pels, and I guess someone whose season just randomly implodes. I don't hate the idea of getting better sooner, provided it's not using a rental, which this isn't.

Then fit: maybe we can play the Magic's game of running without a true PG because we have a big who can run the offense. Maybe, I guess? Feels early to commit to Boozer in that kind of role, but I like the idea of not needing a heliocentric ballhandler, after the whole Ja experience. Can Suggs, Coward and Boozer be 1A, B and C ball handlers, in some order?

Finally value: I'd prefer to send someone other than Pippen, given that we're not getting a true PG back. Lakers first is probably in the early 20s, is my guess, but they're probably a lottery team with a long Luka injury, I can't help feeling. I guess this is fine, we have a lot of mediocre firsts. Ideally I'd send a slightly better PF prospect (Jackson?) and add some kind of protection to the pick - you get worst of Memphis and Utah's instead if it's, say, top 8.

But maybe we just want Scoot ourselves - feel like he fits the timeline better. Suggs arguably locks us in at almost every position while leaving us without championship upside.

As a Grizz fan, we could just target Black. Not sure Suggs or Scoot are worth a first.

I like this for both teams. ORL takes a swing on a true PG and PDX gets a better roster fit whom is also still young.

While I'd do a Scoot for Black swap, that does absolutely nothing to fix Portland's roster. Black would still be behind Dame/Ja/Jrue.

Black's more of a SG than a PG and he's actually big enough to play the 3...If he was a real PG, ORL wouldn't be having this conversation. He's a really good player but his offense is very much like Franz & Paolo, he's become a powerful driver but the shooting is still just okay. He could help any team with his versatility and potentially elite defense - I'd only move him (from ORL perspective) because there isn't a clear path to start and he'll probably earn a starter-level salary. I'd love to see him in a rebuilding situation with a young team where he could really spread his wings...I also understand that's not a description of POR anymore.

Maybe when the Dame/Jrue historical tour ends.

I can only imagine Portland doing this if they don’t think they’ll re-sign Scoot.

If Memphis wanted Scoot, they would have included him in the Morant deal.

They didn’t pay a first and Pippen in order to trade Ja though so not sure I agree with connecting those dots.

I just don’t think Memphis should be trading firsts right now in general, but if you’re doing it - probably should be for the upside play at least.

Black is younger, more versatile and is a better lead guard in my opinion.
