Sam Merrill Value

Does any team have interest in trading a TPE and a pick/picks the Cavs can use in a sign and trade for Kuminga on a 1/9-10 million prove it deal then potentially use to dump Schroeder.

Sign and trade deals need to be three years. Kuminga doesn't want to sign for that amount for three years. Kuminga wants $20M per if he's signing for 3 years. Kuminga can just sign for the tax MLE with the Cavs for one year if another team doesn't step up to the plate before the Hawks eventually waive the cap hold and his Bird Rights.

Edit: The list of Cavs players who managed a positive on/off across the 18 playoff games isn't that long. They've already lost one of them to Philly. They shouldn't trade another to add Kuminga.

2 years can be ungtd, which Smitty should know. Not sure if that stuff is simply bad aggregation.

Back to the OP, I don't see a team taking on the whole contract and giving up value to Cleveland.

The problem is the guaranteed versus non-guaranteed status isn't helpful from Kuminga's perspective. Kuminga doesn't want to commit to a lower number for three years. The Lakers have reportedly offered him around the money he's looking for but the Hawks have no interest in the contracts they're looking to send back.

My guess is that someone would have taken Merill into a TPE/MLE and sent back a 2nd or something at the start of the offseason. But as teams have made moves the number of teams who can do that has dwindled and might not get any value back now or even have to spend a 2nd to get someone to take him.

I thought options had to wait for the third year?

He's better than Kuminga, you shouldn't dump him to sign Kuminga.

Better is subjective, but Merrill, like Wade had a reliable basketball skill that translated into a positive impact in the playoffs and that should matter more than aesthetics preferences or potential to the Cavs.

I’m biased because I averaged over 50ppg with him in a shortened quartered season on 2k.

Merrill is the better player. Kuminga is an awful fit with this Cavs team.

Options can only be on the last year of a deal.

Not sure how Kuminga is as awful fit? He certainly has not lived up to his draft status, and the rumors are he is not coachable, but he can score, has the size and athleticism that are sorely lacking on this team. He isn't a reliable three point shooter but is that the only qualifier to be a good fit on this team?
For me the question on Kuminga is more about maturity and coachability than on fit. If signed, will he earn his minutes by fitting into the offense and doing what is required defensively? If he is looking to be a superstar then I would agree that he isn't a good fit, he should sign with a non-contending/tanking team where he can just put up shots without regard to playing winning team basketball. Bit if his agent is smart he will make the example out of how the Cam Thomas experience ended in Brooklyn.

Sign and trades require teams receiving the player to be hard capped at the first apron. Even if you thought Kuminga was better or a better fit than Merrill, he’s not worth the effort to drop that salary.

If he was willing to fit into an offense and doing what is required defensively, he would still be a Warrior. Kuminga sees himself as a star, but his skill level is that of a role player. He doesn’t seem to be improving in any area of the game. The general sentiment is that he listens to his agent too much.

Is there a single person out there who thinks that particular agent is smart?

So want play like a star want to be paid like a star but currently isn’t even a consistent rotational player?

Seems like he should go to a rebuilding team rather than Cleveland.

Not sure what I expected but I'm surprised the range here is from a team giving a 2nd to him being bad salary at $9m a year.

He was a positive contributing role player in the playoffs and could stay on the court, even getting some crunch time minutes. The defense improved significantly last year to where he's a class above a guy like Kennard, and he learned some of the tricks to make guys pay when they sell out too hard on the shot.

But I guess he's getting older (but without many miles) so you don't know how long that will keep up, and the track record is pretty short? Regardless, if he's roughly neutral value or worse then the Cavs keep him. Thought he'd draw two 2nds like Isaiah Joe.

Merrill is an exceptional shooter.
You can probably get a second for that skill to the right team, He doesn’t have first round value though. I don’t think the. Cavs would or should move him for Kuminga though.

Could Merrill return something like IJoe, sure. But the timing is likely not the best anymore to get that return. Finding the team that wants him, has a TPE/MLE big enough to absorb him, and enough tax space is a lot harder at this stage of free agency.
